Are prerunners capable offroad?

I was wondering if 2wd prerunners are pretty capable offroad? Or does modding one out for offroading leave you with just a nice looking mall crawler? I got a prerunner because, for one, I'm only 23 and 4x4 was out of my affordibility, plus the added maintenance, but wanted to know how it'd do offroad.

It depends on the terrain and the driver.

The only thing you can do is take it offroad and find out for yourself. Just start off EASY and go prepared. Do not go offroad alone - have another vehicle with you. Do it legally. Have tow points & tow straps with you.

The one thing - you'll be using the gas a lot more for momentum. Too much gas and you're gonna start breaking things.

 

youll be fine, I wheel the piss outta my 2wd. Go on a few trail runs with some guys. Lock it, air down and cruise. Youll never have 4x4 capabilities obviously but youd be suprised what you can get around in a 2wd. I love my prerunner

 

No. Prerunners have been known to spontaneously explode once taken off-road. I've seen it.

 

Unfortunately, nope, no locker . It does seem the traction control stuff on the new ones help a lot to keep you moving though, but yeah I guess if you were trying to do hardcore rock climbing the locker would probably be a requirement.

Capable off road? I say yes. AS capable as a 4x4? not quite. But it is capable off road even though it does have its limits, and those limits are based on the driver's experience....

 

You can get away with some stuff. But there is a world of difference between no locker and locker.

Yea. Maybe you can slowly save up for one. If you are going to be doing a decent amount of offroading it's worth it.

 

Yup you don't have a locker. It's only available for the TRD OffRoads.

 

When my warranty runs out and the crappy dunlops wear down, would it be possible to swap in the locker? Or is that just a bad idea?

 

Locker will help but driver skills are just as important IMO.

 

Not a bad idea....lockers are awesome. But - a whole other subjet to research. There are lots of different types of lockers available and they all have their pros & cons, variations in price, and different characteristics. The cheapest locker is a lunchbox locker and the more expensive ones are selectable lockers.

Having a locker will make you more capable than you are now. Having a locker will not make you unstoppable. Driver experience has A LOT to do with it.

Since you have a 2010, you do have the ALSD. Push the traction control button one time to turn it on, and the traction control and throttle intervention off. Not as good as a locker, but you'll be surprised how well it will work in certain situations.

 

Depends on the definition of what OffRoad is?

 

I have a 4x4 and I have got pretty far back on some trails in 2wd. I even tried to see how far i could go in 2wd wheeling with a buddy that had a 2wd 4runner and I was impressed with the 2wd capabilities of are trucks. I did finally get stuck but as I said I have 4wd so I dropped it in 4low and we turned around.

I say go wheeling just don't go alone always have someone that's capable of pulling you out if need be. i think you will be surprised what a Pre-runner can do off road.

The ARB locker looks like the ticket. Its not cheap, but appears to give me the best option, short of trading in for a 4x4. Been thinking about the Warn Trans4mer winch mount as well. I kind of feel like, with the ARB locker + tow straps + winch + friend with 4x4 would get you through 95 percent of everything.

As for the ALSD, so I actually want to disengage the default mode by pressing the little "swerving truck" button? There is also another button with "RSC" written on it. That seems kind of odd that by default, the wheels don't go into LSD, but I guess default traction control probably works through individual wheel braking or something.
