Not an issue with it being your first. I installed my kids rear facing seats in the middle of the rear seat. Then the passenger has more leg room and its the safest place for a newborn. The only drawback is climbing in to get the baby/seat out depending on the style seat you buy. I'm 6'0" and it was not an issue just to lean in and grab the kids. There are already some great threads on this, do a search and you will get more answers. Dont listen to idiots who say buy a 4Runner or Tundra, there are lots of people with Tacomas and small kids/babies.

I haven't had an issue with the car seats fitting. The passenger may suffer some leg room but everyone fits.

I’ve been driving with mi kid behind me (rear facing car seat) for almost 6 months and I fit ok... I’m 6’ tall and yes I could lean the back rest a little bit more but my legroom is perfect.. i have my son behind me because the way I park at home.. believe me, it is doable... do not buy the bulkiest car seat...

i actually traded my 2016 taco access for a 4 door and I am ok with it.. I do not want a full size pickup and my wife’s rav4 is perfect for the three of us on the weekend...

Op do not over stress, I was able to ask the sales man to check around 3 car seats on my truck before buying...

If you want to trade, trade... if no, don’t... IMO you don’t need to.

New dad of 4 weeks here, Car seat in middle is the only solution unless you are very small. A previous comment mentioned wife of 5’ 7” has enough room. I call BS. My wife is 5’7” and after the second car ride she already mentioned that this isn’t going to work. I was so relieved to find enough space in the middle. Not sure why it was mentioned this is not “to the book”. Car seats have multiple install methods and being in the middle of the backseat is the safest spot for a child. Plan to have two child’s within 5 years let’s say, forget the Taco. Wish I would have heard this advice when I was buying instead of those who say it “works”

Best advice I can give is to buy or borrow a rear facing car seat and bring to the dealership when you are serious. This is a huge purchase and you want to get it right instead of going off everyone feelings.

I am only “planning” on one child, but if more were in my future it would have to be a Tundra.

Its not by the book if you use the metal seat anchors as they are only designed for the carseat to be in either the rear driver or passenger seat. You could still use the seat belt as the attachment point and thats perfectly fine.

You can put the car seat in the truck and you should be fine. Just keep in mind that besides the car seat you'll have the stroller, baby bag and other things. You should consider getting a tonneau cover so you can at least put the stroller in the bed. My kids are older and I'm past the car seats and strollers but it's something you should keep in mind. BTW - congrats!!

One kid? If so, the wife will sit in the back. Passenger seat will be open for man's best friend.

If you already bought your car seat i'd bring it to the dealer and ask to fit it -- if they want to make a sale (which they will) they'll let you do it.

With your wife being 5'7" it could honestly be a pretty tight fit. I have a infant rear facing car seat (Nuna Pipa Lite) behind the passenger side and the passenger seat is definintely pretty far forward. Luckily my wife is 5'4"

I also have a toddler front facing seat behind my seat. i'm 6'2" and have my seat all the way back but my 3 year old fits fine.

The biggest challenge for you (Really your wife) is if she can deal with being slightly uncomfortable for about 2 years before you can forward face the seat. Once you can forward face the seat you should be just fine. That or get a Tundra/Full Size

We're upgrading my wife's car to a new 2020 outback (XT) though which will be our "family" car. Good luck man i spent a lot of time trying to figure out if i needed to upgrade the taco which i really don't want to do

Yeah the middle seat doesn't have the side seat anchors. It does have the anchor in the back which would work along with the seat belt. I don't think its recommended but it should work

I can't imagine trying to fit a car seat in the back of a Tacoma. The space is pretty limited (even my 9yo son commented about how little space there is). All I can say is welcome to fatherhood, the land of compromises. Your first compromise should probably be not getting a Tacoma and getting either a 1/2T pickup if you really need the bed space, or getting a 4Runner. I didn't realize how much more space there was in a 4Runner until I bought my '20 Taco and compared it to my '16 4Runner.

There is an anchor on each seat closest to the middle so you can easily use the anchor on the car seat and attach to these. This is how I ran for away until I removed the seat behind the driver do to I installing a fridge.

2 Car seats here, rearward they would fit OK....obliviously more room once forward facing, but for being a "crew cab" (double cab) rear seat room is tighter compared to other brands.

Measure your backseat area. Don't be tempted to buy the biggest car seat on the market. There is an older thread on here and a pretty good consensus as to which works best in Taco backseats. We went with a Chicco convertible that just fit for my wife (5'1") and for me (6').
