Replaced timing components.....still didn't fix it.

So I spent two weeks every day after work trying to fix my truck for the obnoxious diesel-sounding tick it's been making (2.7l). We pulled the motor, took off the timing cover, etc etc. and found out the inner tensioner was messed up and there was slack in the chain. So I got a kit and replaced all the timing components (both chains, guides, tensioners) and replaced the rear main because it was leaking. Got it all back together and everything went pretty smooth. I was feeling pretty good about it. Anyway we start it up and what do you know, it starts ticking....just like before we fixed it. So at this point I am lost, confused, and pissed at all the time that has gone into fixing it. We put a stethescope on the valve cover and it appears the noise is coming mostly from the two cam gears. Took the valve cover off....no slack between the cam gears.....turned it over because the cams looked dry but they are getting oil. I'm lost. Everything looks like it should. Has anyone experienced this before or could my cam gears or cams be making this noise? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    miles on the motor?

not sure what it could be but that info could be helpful.

Sorry, it's a 97 and it's got 100k. I think this ticking started when i over-revved it one day. I downshifted into a gear way to low and it went past redline. As for if it's the reason it's ticking I can't say for sure.

You may have floated a valve and it hit the piston. So you may have a bent valve.

yea i would check you valves. your cam gears shouldnt make that kind of noise if there not obvisoly broken are missing teath. check you valves and clearences and see if that isnt your problem.

I will talk to the guys tomorrow and see what they think. I'm a trainee so I'm still learning. The guys who helped would know better than i do, but would a bent valve mean I would need new pistons, etc as well? I have checked valve clearance. According to Alldata they are within spec.....

Possibly... If you floated a valve like this kid

If that happened it would not run at all, or at least miss very very bad lol.

Good call getting it looked at again, let us know how it goes OP.

Can't remember where I heard this, but I remember hearing something about these engines having an issue with wrist pin wear. One of our company trucks is an 04 with a 2.4 engine, it has a noise that sounds like what you are describing. It's been there for the last 30K that I can remember. Still runs fine, does not burn oil at 127K.

I very seriously doubt you bent a valve if it's still running okay. It should show up on a compression test if you have a bad valve.

By " Diesel sounding tick " Is it really that pronounced, like a Diesel sitting at idle, I mean is it a sharp tick sound that you'd hear if maybe a valve is loose ? When I think of a diesel type noise from anything but a diesel I'd associate that hollow sound as a possible rod knock or a wrist pin working its way loose but I'm talking worst case, yeah possibly floating a valve & if ya did then you probably gaulded the cam also, but how was it running ?? OK ?? Did you change any belts ??

Think your mad now, think how'd it be to find out that the mysterious tick that appeared after you over revved was the result of the sudden change in RPM & you stretched & warped a fan/alternator/ac belt serpentine belt etc; & now you have the infamous "belt slap" which anyone who's had it can tell you it sounds just like a loose tappet or equally annoying noise coming out of your top end, of course this assumes other than the noise thats driving you batshit, that your truck runs reasonably well.....good luck tracking it down....

By "diesel sounding tick" i mean if you didn't know any better you would think it actually has a diesel motor in it. I probably should have stated this earlier because it might help. If you were to go out and start my truck when it's cool, this would be the motor at it's loudest. You start it up, the motor immediately runs up to 1.5 grand and you can't hear it, then settles at it's idle rpm and begins ticking. When you drive the truck and run it to it's operating temperature, the ticking settles and is hardly noticeable at all. I have ran it for about 13k like this.

All I can think of now is the wrist pins or maybe even the crank bearings (the ones in the lower ends of the rods) but you would thing there would also be a whirling sound along with the diesel sound.

Like another poster mentioned the belts start disconnecting things and running it and see if you can isolate the problem.

I dont see how you can 'over-rev'.. there is a rev limiter in place on the factory ecu to prevent damage like valve float...

He wasn't accelerating, he blew a gear & over revved "de-cellerating, completely opposite ,very easy to damage this way, suck a valve, stretch a belt, etc;....

it has good compression in all cylinders. crank and main bearings seemed to be fine when we pulled the pan but i didn't spend too much time on it. Might have to go over it again. I will try and get a video on monday and post it up here for ya.
