Gear Shift Tight/Won't Indicate Drive

Hey y'all, hoping you can provide some insight into this issue I'm having before I have to bite the bullet and go to the dealership.

On occasion, although it seems to be happening more frequently, my gear shift is very tight to move around from park to reverse to drive. Yesterday when I shifted down to drive, the lights on the indicator as well as the screen behind the steering wheel did not indicate I was in drive (even though I was). Only after I pulled the shifter back as far as I could would it display drive.

This is a problem I've never had with any car so I don't even know where to begin.

INB4 Should've got a real truck with a real transmission!

Unfortunately that has got to be an issue with the circuit board, it's an electric actuated assembly. The resistance doesn't seem right, I would disassemble what I could to see what may be causing the resistance. Perhaps a wire became entangled on the shaft.

 

What would I be disassembling? The center console area to see down if a wire is entangled? Thank you in advance

 

Yep. Look on youtube for "shift boot removal", there is bound to be something to walk you through the process. Resistance has got to be the result of a mechanical abnormality. The lights and lack of feedback is electrical non-continuity. The latter could be a result of the former. If you dont find what's causing the resistance, it is likely something to have the dealer look at.

I will probably be heading to the dealership, but gonna look myself to see if there is some small obstruction. I won’t typically mess with anything electrical

 

I had the same problem a few years ago on my 2005 TRD sport and it was the transmission gear position switch. The aluminum corrodes and binds the shaft making it difficult to shift the tranny. Mine would act up when it was colder outside. It is located on the right side of the transmission case (passenger side) same shaft opposite side of the tranny from where the shift cable attaches. It is kind of triangular shaped with the wire connecter attached at the top, if memory serves me well. I would recommend having a new replacement switch on hand before trying to remove it. try spraying blaster or wd-40 on the shaft now and before you get ready to replace it. Not sure if your tranny is the same as the one on the 2005 with the 4.0 liter six engine or if this all changed with the six speed transmission used with the 3.5 . I didn't crawl under my new 2020 TRD Off-Road to see if it is the same set up. It is worth a look. Good Luck. Dave
