Anyone ever used split style CV boots, either with or without a lift? My passenger side has a small hole in it and I'm wanting to use a split boot, but how is the durability?

Just google it, they are atrocious, I'd use it as a bandaid on a long trip, thats it.

Reman'd axles are stupid cheap now, its easier and less mess. Or a full boot kit replacement on the weekend.

Yeah, I mainly don't want to have to pay for another alignment after just having done my tie rods and passenger side sway bar link last week. (Accidentally nicked CV boot with the carbide tipped sawzall blade I had to use on the old sway bar link and didn't notice at the time)

I wonder if I can get away with using some RTV silicon adhesive since the hole is only about 1.5mm...

It’s not necessary to get an alignment after removing and replacing the half shafts.

Some people have had problems with Napa and other aftermarket half shafts.

This is the place to shop.

if you are going that route try butyl rubber gutter sealer instead

Don't you have to disconnect the outer tie rod end to be able to pop the axle out? Or could I just leave it on and turn the wheel all the way and still be able to pop it out?

Getting it out is not a problem, getting another back in is a little harder with the tie rod attached. It was for me anyway.

You take the castle nut off and bang the side of the knuckle where the tie rod end goes through, with a 3 lb hammer, and the tie rod end spits right out of the knuckle. Do NOT pound on the threaded part of the tie rod end. No need to mess with the adjustment. When you put it back together, the tie rod end goes right back in the tapered hole in the knuckle.

    Hit here—-> l_/ \______

For the lower ball joint, just take out the 2 bolts that go in from the bottom.

Were you able to get it back in without damaging anything?

You do, but that doesn’t mean you need another alignment. It’s only if you were to adjust them, which you aren’t.

Sorry I'm having a hard time visualizing this. So you hit somewhere close to where the brake caliper attaches? I'm going to try to just replace the boot since nothing else is damaged and not much grease has come out. I sealed the hole temporarily with the RTV silicon adhesive I had laying around.

Oh yeah I guess so. I could just bungee cord it up out of the way while I work on the rest.

He’s saying hit the spindle itself with a hammer. Right here in the red.

Oh ok. I was just going to rent one of these for the tie rod ends, it worked great for the drivers side and doesn't damage the boot or threads:Screenshot_20191229-064943.jpg
I thought he meant for the CV itself haha

I’ve removed my CVs more than I care to think about and I’ve never taken the tie rod out. I just remove the bolts holding the spindle to the lower ball joint. That’s it.

Sure you can, but it’s nice being able to swing the whole assembly out of the way. Takes like 2 minutes to undo the TRE.

Yup. You do have to wrestle it a bit to get the one end back into the hub. Helps if you turn the steering wheel before you start.

I disconnected the tie rod to get it back in, I should have did this before I took the axle out.
I've removed and replaced a few axles from GM trucks before and the Tacoma axles are more difficult to work with.
The more shit out of the way the easier it is.
