Shit, I thought that was a silly joke. That sucks but I always say shitty experiences make for the best stories. So there's that I guess...

Its a joke I have normally seen in the firearm community as in “ lost in boating accident is where the gun is when gov comes knocking” so its a joke to include sai being deleted in a “legal” way

Cant we just delete the codes and limp mode in HP Tuners if the SAI gets lost in a boating accident? Why the need for this swap?

Haha, naw i got em ill put them in at some point just gotta find the time. And dude... cmon no breakaways in the engine cage?

For off road use, yes, yes you can. You can turn off the CEL's for it, and move the SAI limp mode throttle blade angle back up to full throttle. But i think this was more meant for those that want again, for off road use, the ability to get rid of it for ~ 50-100 bucks (cost of a 2009-11 ecu)

So a bit of an update on the 2009-2011 ECU in a 2012-2015..

I've purchased a 2009 ECU to fit into my 2015, and due to closing on a house December 23rd, moving the 24th and unpacking that night in preparation for having family over to the new place for Christmas Dinner, I just wasn't able to get in to verify the "swap" yet.

Well, @12TRDTacoma got ahead of me and performed the swap as noted a few posts back. All works great!.. With the exception of the Temp gauge. The truck runs/operates exactly as it should. Tach works, CEL works (with no codes :D) and everything else you'd expect works as designed. @12TRDTacoma noted coolant temp was checked via OBD2 scanner and temps were reporting ~190ºF as expected. Odd I thought..

I found it extremely difficult to believe that Toyota changed JUST the coolant temp address/bit on the BUS. And found it equally difficult to believe that the gauge failed at the exact timing of the swap. So we troubleshooted/brainstormed for a bit and found a unique wiring difference on the Coolant Temp Sensor in the 2011 for a particular build (without VSC) and thought we might have found the culprit. Right about the time he signed off for the evening, I noticed one discrepancy that I missed when doing the pin-out mapping.

I went through things using the 2012+ diagram as my "master", going pin-by-pin confirming the plug/pin location for each wire. As noted previously EVERYTHING is identical (SAI excluded) EXCEPT the 2009-2011 have one pin (E13, pin 19) that is fed directly to the temp gauge in the cluster from the ECU. 2009-2011 trucks do not have the coolant temp gauge on the CAN BUS network while 2012-2015 Trucks drive the coolant temp gauge off the CAN BUS. I originally missed this, as I mentioned I looked at this from a 2012 centric view.

    So what does this mean?

Simply put, the '09-'11 ECU swap is still viable, especially for those that need to not have any trace of the SAI system for whatever reason (*Cough*). Just be aware that the coolant temp gauge will not function during a simple ECU swap. All other systems/functions are 100% operation, so the truck is good to drive/tune.

What about being able to monitor coolant temp? Great question. There's a few ways this can be tackled. Some are considerably more complex (ie: niche) than others. But there are solutions, for those that need this for certain reasons.

    1. Getting the '12+ gauge to work in the cluster will require some work but can be done by broadcasting over the CAN BUS. It's not a plug-n-play kind deal, and requires some other hardware.
    2. Wiring in an aftermarket coolant temp gauge
    3. Using OBD2 scanning gauge (ie: Scangauge II or similar)

Id I'd be interested in the first option to keep things as clean as possible.. ultimately though, if I have to get a scan gauge or have to get a dual coolant gauge for both the engine and blower as part of my boost and AFR gauge setup I don't have an issue with that either. I PM'ed you so if there is any leg work you need me to do on this thing or investigative work, I'm all in!

So I’m running my ovtune in my 14 supercharged Tacoma. I ironically have an aftermarket AEM temp gauge on my cluster........would there be a way you could track down a 09-11 ECU, tune it with HP (for off road use ), and ship it to me? I’d pay whatever you needed ofcourse. Then at that point once I received it, I could just swap my ECU with one that had hp with added goodies plus I’d have my original with Ovtune as a spare??

Because you live in Commifornia like I do and this permanently deletes SAI out of the equation via hardware which ultimately affects it via software.

If you don't do it, there exists a small chance that despite code deletions and disables that you may have a pending and stored code for SAI in your PCM and if you smog your truck and they catch that despite the check engine light being on you will fail everytime.

It's a doable thing but you would be paying some good casholas for it. The computer would be anywhere from $50-200 alone, after that you have to reflash the VIN to your trucks VIN which may cost you extra, then relicensing the HPTuners software for that calibration PCM will cost 4 additional credits which will be $200 additional. After you get the PCM you then have to perform an immobilizer reset which no one can do but you alone which will cost you 30 minutes of your time additional to the PCM install time it will take you to do so.

In short, you are easily looking at $5-800 for all of the hardware to arrive to you all modified and ready to plug and play like you want, @JustDSM would probably be out some time which is why I add in the few extra hundred in costs and if you go to the dealer or am outside mechanic to do the immobilizer reset or PCM install or both, that would drive the cost up as well.

I can go as far as supplying you a complete setup, or just doing the electronic work.

    Estimate:
    2009-2011 ECU: ~$150
    TRD Tune/VIN recalibration: $75 ($50 w/ HP Tuners Tune)
    HPTuners credits $200

~$400 out the door for an ECU already setup/tuned in HPTuners to your spec. Of course will vary depending on the ECU but most of the earlier ones are about $150.

Correct, as @12TRDTacoma mentioned, you could keep your OV ECU as a spare. You'd just be out 30 min of your time and a paperclip to swap them.

I could always remake my tune in a hpt file for you, that way you could have both, and tune from mine if you wanted to.

It just won't have our extended tables, just stock TRD sized tables.

Im curious, for someone looking for the plug and play nature that you describe, why stray from the OVtuned setup?

If I could answer, it's probably because he has a handheld, and is adding mods, smaller pulleys, etc, kind of beyond what can be done without individual logging and dialing in for maximum benefit.

And because updating tunes on handhelds (on our side) is a bit of a cumbersome process

Care to post a pic of how you installed your coolant temp gauge in the stock cluster?

I’m more than happy with your tune, mods are done. Only thing I may add (but probably won’t is going from a 2.7 to a 2.6)......the only reason I’m at all interested in hp is to get rid of a certain manufacturer add on which is for off road use only.......

I may have worded that wrong......my temp gauge is on my column. It’s on the right. I used an inline sensor in my upper coolant hose.
