This!! I don’t know what algorithm Toyota uses for calculating, but when I calculate it separately, my numbers are vastly different than what the screen says. Normal driving my calculations are worse than what the truck says, on long trips it’s better, but never the same, and none of it is great. Mathematically, by the end of the tank, the tank average number shouldn’t change at all, but I’ve seen it vary by 0.5 mpg in 30 minutes of driving on a 1/4 tank - not likely. If you are relying on the truck to tell you what you are getting, I don’t think you are getting an accurate picture. My experience with my truck, no mods.

2019 Off Road V6 4X4, drive about 50% highway 50% city average 16.4, driving 65-70 on highway. Stock tire 2" lift nothing else that should impact mpg. Best I have ever seen on a non stop 110 mile highway run at 70 mph was 17.4 mpg. Disappointing MPG my gen 2 would average 18.5 driving same route and a bit over 20 on longer highway trips. Took it in for 5K service had them check it they said on the scan tool they 21.2 mpg - I have checked it every fill up never has hit 17 mpg. I only drive about 5K miles per yr so I am not going to think about the crappy mpg.

I think it doesn’t include gas used when the truck is not moving. So if you stop a lot during the trip, calculated mpg drifts away from real mpg.

Not sure what you are going about, but I keep mpg records for past 2 years and display values are within 0.2-0.5 mpg range on higher side from your manual miles driven/gallons filled calculation (tank average)

Like I said, I was only referring to what I experienced. Your experience is different, and that’s okay - not trying to discount that at all. Plus different truck setups, tire treads and inflation, how one drives, and how one fills up the tank, etc. all play into it. What someone gets on their truck may be vastly different than someone else. But it makes me personally skeptical of the hypermileage some are getting here, esp when they show what they get right after they filled up when the tank mileage just reset.

My only point is that I was agreeing that the only true method of calculating mpg you got on a tank of gas is what I quoted before, which the truck’s computer is not doing, and in my experience is not very accurate. I find that it is useful as a relative measure of how aggressive I’m being with the gas pedal at any given time, but that’s about it. How much variance there is in that is likely impossible to determine truck to truck and person to person. If it works better for you than me, that’s great!

Not sure either. I do notice that when I stop right after I filled the tank, usually on the way home, tank mileage does go down while I’m stopped, so there’s something in the equation there. I think what they’re doing has more to do with fuel flow rate.

Mine CPU is usually more like 1.1mpg optimistic by the time the tank is empty. It make sense that there are a lot of variables affecting its fuel measurements, including fuel temp/density as well as climate and whether your vehicle kicks out stored gas vapor when it’s hot. Here’s what I read about those things:

Hasn’t he just had that strikethru for a while? I’ve seen him active while his handle (or whatever) bears the line.

It is almost 2020 and you are referring to 2013 article? I do have 2012 toyota and its ECU 3 to 4 mpg high, but this tacoma is very, very close. Drove 2 hot summers, 2 winters, some mountains and still within 0.2-0.5 margin.

I’m not sure the variables (temp, fuel density, vapor capture tech) on vehicles designed for model year 2016 have changed much since 2013. The things I cited affect accuracy. Your anecdote doesn’t explain other people’s less-accurate CPU reading.

I'm usually weighted down close to GVWR, have 285s, so on a good day I will get 15mpg. Also a DCLB...

Yeah, the 2wd, air dam, road tires and my foot help fuel economy. But “greater” So Cal also has the tallest mountains in the lower 48. I frequently climb from sea level up to Whitney Portal (8k elev.) and Manker Flat (6k) and spend a decent amount of time on fireroads and bumpy stuff too. I’ve mentioned in other threads that I have two other Tacos in my family, both 2017 ORs, and I get at least fifty more miles per tank no matter what rig and commute. But I suck at picking lines on sketchy terrain. Not everyone is good at everything.

Trip summaries don't do much for me. Too many factors at play. Posting up the lifetime tank avg. would be far more informative.

    19.4 is my best. Ever.
