But yes there’s a lot of money in Hawaii. People that buy housing there have to come in with a ton of money.

Usually yes. Unless the rules strictly state you can’t in the condo docs.

There's a disturbingly high number of foreclosures in my area...

 

No it’s way to expensive. Most houses don’t.

 

But why now? I thought the economy was getting better...

 

People take out mortgages they can’t afford in a good and bad economy.

 

My dad says it's also bad to be "house poor", meaning you can technically afford the place but it's so expensive that you can't afford anything else.

 

You know what "foreclosure rage" is?

 

When people who are losing their homes decide to get back at the bank by trashing the house and/or stripping it of valuable items...

Examples of foreclosure rage that I have heard of include:

• Smashing holes in walls
• Stripping items like plumbing, wiring, light fixtures and, entire HVAC systems
• Spraypainting obscene things on the walls
• Breaking windows
• Gutting the entire kitchen
• Burning the house down
• Bulldozing the house

 

The bank can go after them in court. When you sign for a mortgage there’s a clause in there that says you will keep it in livable condition and won’t trash it.

 

Unfortunately it still doesn't stop them from doing it...

My best friend's parents bought a very nice house in Doylestown back in 2012 that wasn't in foreclosure but I do believe it was a short sale; The people they bought the house from them gouged holes in the drywall, took a kitchen chandelier with them that was supposed to stay, and spraypainted obscene things on the basement walls in bright orange paint (luckily it was an unfinished basement and they just finished the basement).
