Picked up the "new" truck friday and plan to do lots of mods and changes to it but the first thing i need to take care of is the rough ride.
Im sure its been asked before but the threads ive found are asking for a different outcome so hopefully i wont get flamed to much for making my own.

Current setup is a set of after market shocks up front not sure of brand but they are adjusted to 3inch of lift. Rear springs appear to be stock.

Took the truck on some washboard roads/trails today and thought the truck was going to fall apart just going 10-15 on the gravel roads.

Truck will be my DD and weekend warrior so whats the best options for a smoother ride? Looking to not spend more then 2500-3000 on the whole suspension setup and would like about 2.5inch of lift or so. Im getting rid of the 18s and 35s and am going to go with 17s and 33s

    Thanks for any input

They are sway a way coilovers. You should buy some new kings or some eibachs with bilstein struts

If you're looking to actually buy some nice components I'd get some coilovers, fox, icon, something like that, theres a few other options than those two as well. But they'll be much better than what ya got now. If you're riding on 35's then you definatly have those adjustable struts maxxed out! Preloaded to the max!

Ahh rock lobster ya beat me to it!

I will go ahead and say now, to ignore the people who will inevitably give you a hard time for buying a truck and complaining about a firm ride.

Good quality suspensions will apparently give you a firmer but smoother ride. I think this means that it tightens up the handling (compared to stock) but the higher quality shocks will absorb the bumps much better than stock. Do you have any pics of the current setup? Someone may be able to tell you what it is and why it sucks.

Kudos on dropping the 35's on 18's.

Do you have a body lift as well?

I was curious as well, if you have a body lift to fit 35's, or are your fenders all cut up?

Thanks for the input i was planning on getting some kings as thats what i had for the 05 i use to have. Just wondered if i need a arms or anything else maybe will pick up a arb compressor amd start airing down when i go to drive washboard roads?
And no body lift at all and fenders are not cut just the bumper but the tires are also so slick that they compare to a 33. I have no intention of running 35s again i favor the look of 33s better anyways. Not to mention a hair bit more power and some better mpgs. Will get some pics of the current setup

They are sway a way coilovers that he has now. And they aren't true 35s. They are a 305 size tire

that’s exactly how I feel. My brand new 2020 Tacoma sport feels like it’s gonna fall apart over minor road imperfections.

what did you end up buying? Did it improve your ride?

    1. Uniball uppers are always a nice upgrade imo. Especially if youre going to play with her. Most help alignment issues caused by lift as well. So theyre at the least a good idea.

    2. Airing down while hitting rough roads will help immensely. Just dont go too low and hit it hard. I broke a couple rims doing this.

@Kwikvette, 2015 is hardly an "old post" by necroposting standards. Saw one recently from 2009, iirc... :D

Here's a tip for all those future peeps wanting a soft ride from their pickup truck.

Sell it and buy a Corolla or something.

I have Kings on mine, and while it's a "nice" ride, I'd hardly call it soft. You can make the ride softER with some high end shocks valved for a soft ride, but that's a whole lotta money. Monroes I hear are "soft". Put some C or P range all season tires on it, too.

Just keep in mind anytime you modify the suspension to get away from that "rough" ride, you're diminishing its ability to do "truck things" like tow and haul stuff or go off road. Trucks don't ride rougher than a car in order to make more of a man out of you, it's because it's designed to handle a load, and when there's no load, it's going to ride less favorably than a car would.

I just don`t understand why people buy a Truck complain about the ride Never Haul anything Yet they can not live without a Truck.

Buy a 4Runner if you want a Softer ride and still need a 4X4 Night and day difference in ride

even though this thread was old ill comment my 2 cents. I since sold the 1st gen tacoma. I bought a 2017 3rd gen sport. Truck was still an extremely rough ride on washboard gravel roads. Upgraded suspension to old man emu and a dakar leaf pack in the rear. Also was running the 886 springs up front. So this setup technically increased my load capacity. And the truck rides like a completely different animal. So to the guy that made the comment about decreasing a trucks ability by improving ride quality is completely false. Also many people use trucks and need trucks for many different reasons. Its not all about hauling heavy loads. For the guy that was wanting to improve your ride. Id recommend old
Man emu. Ill be putting the same setup on my 2020 off road.

and for the Guy to make the assumption “ never haul anything “ you come across like you don’t have an education when you make comments like that. I don’t think your out and about following around tacoma owners daily to see if they are hauling stuff. If you would re word your statement maybe next time you can get across some useful advice that will actually help the person that was reaching out for advice.
