Very good question? So far, I can't really say I found anything cool with my metal detector that I can think of?

I can, however, tell you a quick story while metal detecting that would make you facepalm yourself, HAHAHA.

While I was MD'ing a park in, I believe it was still a part of La Puente, CA... a city near Los Angeles... Anyways, it's about 8am and while metal detecting a park, I'm sweeping my coil and stumble upon what looks like a white/bluish swirling patterned broken crack pipe. The design of the pattern looked really cool, PLUS, I found a crack pipe!!! Don't know why the hell I was all excited about that? I guess just something, in my own wierd mind, something I don't see everyday, personally, and haven't since. So it was something new to see and find, even though it was obviously broken.

Anyways, I throw it in my finds pouch and go about my business. I will take any trash I find, nails, broken glass, etc to throw away, which is the rule of thumb when metal detecting. You don't obviously have to, but it's like picking up the trash and simply putting it where trash belongs.

So anyways, I put it in my finds pouch and throw my finds pouch with my MD'er in the back of my Civic. About 2-3wks later, while talking to my sister that was standing on her driveway porch, I'm unloading something from the trunk of the Civic and happen to remember the broken crack pipe. I'm like, "check out this really cool looking broken crackpipe I found a couple weeks ago while I was metal detecting one of the parks!!! Doesn't it look cool? I didn't find it with my metal detector, of course, because it's glass, but it was just laying on top of the grass and..."

Well, she interrupted me and immediately said, "OH MY GOD RANDY!!! Don't tell me you've had that thing in the back of your car this whole time!!!???... What if you got pulled over by a cop and he found that by accident???"

My reaction was, "Yeah, huh." Almost kinda nonchalant about the whole scenario, but yet kinda serious at the same time. :notsure::cookiemonster:

She kinda did one of these --->:frusty::smack:

Looking back on that whole conversation now, I'm like :laugh::rofl::rofl::rofl:

To this very day, she brings it up from time to time to people and family members telling them what my reaction was like and they just laugh and ROFL!!!:laugh::rofl::rofl::rofl: But, they too are like --->:frusty: What the hell were you thinking, dummy??? :smack:

And my reaction is always still ---> "It was cool to find..." :notsure:

So, that's the story of "The broken crack-pipe".

So, is a Garrett ACE 250 or 350 still a good detector to get for a first-timer? Not looking for gold, just relic/coin type stuff.

Edit: I guess now they are ACE 200, 300, and 400

Definitely good for coins. They're known for that.

But, put more simply, ALL detectors in that price category are good starter detectors, in my humble opinion.

What it boils down to is, in my experiences over the years of conversing is that some people like "tone only" detectors, example would be a Tesoro Compadre. Or detectors with Visual display/number/depth indicators. I like having a bit more information, which is the 250/350 detectors. BUT, that is just me. Also, the information isn't ALWAYS accurate, but it gives you a pretty good idea of what is beneath your feet.

Anyways... even a Bounty Hunter is a good coin machine.

That's the "newer" version of the ACE350, I believe?

I have the older 350 as well.

I like the idea of a waterproof detector like the AT Pro. May go that way cause it will probably be worth it when around the beach and creeks/rivers.

I don't believe you can use an AT Pro in salt water? It's still a VLF detector and highly mineralized mediums mess with VLF machines. For salt water/mineralized soil conditions, you want more of a Pulse Inductor machine, which are tone only, unless they came out with something I haven't heard of yet?

Fresh water, yes, but not salt.
