Hmmm, interesting. I see what you are saying. I think then my only concern would be access. It's one thing to climb under there on level, dry pavement and something else entirely when on a sloppy, muddy, snowy/icy trail.

 

I took it pretty easy driving home last night to not overheat the gears, but I did notice that going up hills it held 3rd gear at low RPM much easier without wanting to downshift. I think highway speeds are going to be where I really notice the difference and the reduction of strain on the engine/transmission.

 

Yup, It will certainly do that much easier.

What are your plans for the front diff?

 

Probably pull it this week and take it up to Northwest Differentials in Monroe, they put the ARB in it the first time around and did a nice job. I feel pretty confident in my ability to do a standard drop-out 3rd member now, but I'm not tackling a clamshell diff anytime soon without some more experience.

 

No issues so far. Not really anything I'd change about it. Without the factory crossmember it tucks way up out of the way of anything. Never had an issue with the factory crossmember either though. Gas isn't something you are going to likely need when you're in a mess of a situation. Anytime I've used it it's usually at camp or alongside a road when I've been trying to stretch it. Personally I wouldn't put tools and parts there because there is a chance that you will be stuck in a situation where you can't get to it.

If you can change a cv axle you can do a front diff. I'd recommend an extra hand getting it in and out so you don't drop it on yourself.

 

Oh I meant regearing it myself, not trying to tackle that on my own just yet. I just finished rebuilding, regearing, and putting an ARB in my 9.5" LC axle, but that clamshell scares me lol.

 

Think he is talking about swapping the gears.

Which I agree with having done gears myself once and blown them up as well haha

I laughed a little. I look at this kinda stuff as a bridge I'll cross when I'm too annoyed to stay on the same side. Too much fun stuff to tackle first, like suspension and drivetrain

 

Costco had these nice heavy duty shelves on sale so got one and spent the day cleaning out the garage.

That's a significant improvement over the way it was before. That space was a definite safety hazard.

When you set them did you didn't a drag test?

 

Waiting for it to self adjust does not seem like a good plan.

Do you have an infrared thermometer to determine the actual temp of the drum when its hot?

 

With the wheel on it should do one full rotation and stop with the dragging. Goes for both sides so you have to find the balance to make sure one isn't working harder than the other.

I do it by sound as well you can tell when one is working harder.

If it's just a bit warm that is fine. Hot is not

 

No need to pull the drum, just pop the rectangular rubber grommet off the back of the backing plate and reach in there with a flat screwdriver to turn the star adjuster a couple clicks.

 

It's a ratchet mechanism that is only meant to tighten. It's very difficult to loosen from the back, as you need to push on the catch too.

 

Yeah good point, you have to push the adjuster catch down at the same time.
