Gotta give it some beans. You were being too careful.

Uphills + slippery mud will challenge even the most well equipped off road vehicles.

    You don't have good tires.

Those Kevlar tires make a great "Highway Tire". They should have been put on the Sport model, not an Off Road Taco.

This is a perfect example of what marketing of nanny system does for people. Op was under prepared, went into an unknown area alone, and is clearly not experienced yet blames the "system" that failed him.

You have stock street tires, Utah clay mud, no recovery gear and little driving skill. I wouldn't expect much less. You can blame the game and say people are being internet bullies all you want if it makes you feel better. The reality is that you're poor decisions and planning potentially put your family and vehicle in danger, as well as anyone who would have had to come recover you. I'd take this as a learning experience for the OP and all viewers. If you're going to go out and explorer new terrain in a stock vehicle, be prepared. Don't blame the nanny system for setting yourself up for failure.

With all of that said, I'm glad you guys made it out unharmed. Great learning experience and you and your wife make a great team. We've all made bad decisions that have put us in some shitty situations, so take comments with a grain of salt.

I agree, thank you! especially for a guy from southern California where we never see rain, let alone mud. hehe. here in cali, if there is little sprinkle, the trails get closed.

i had to be super careful, because we were alone, no second car, no cell service, at least 15 miles away from the road and with 2 small children in sub zero temps. (Celsius so we dont get hate :D) hehe.

also the camera does not do the hill justice, it was steep and there were some humps where if you just floor it, you will likely bottom out on the suspension and damage something.

those were solid comments, thank you. you are 100% on everything you said. even my wife says in the video " got stuck in the mountain.. because your husband is an "offroader" hehe... for the first time" hahaha.
i never blamed any systems though, all i said is that it failed to save us :D.

dude the trail was supposed to be a blm camping ground area basically, it was mostly dry fire road. Before i went down this hill, i did walk down it a bit, it seemed dry. normally friken water should NOT stick on hills and make it muddy.
i'm from southern california, we rarely see rain and if it sprinkle a bit, they close all the trails. :D

what kind of recovery gear would you have for such a terrain? a winch won't save. you think snow chains would help?

And there's the problem. People venture out unprepared. And next thing you know FS Roads are being closed off every time it rains or snows because someone took their badass Range Rover out, got stuck in the snow or mud, and someone died or had to be rescued.

The lesson I'd recommend you take from this is not as much what your truck is capable of / not capable of...I mean everyone needs to figure that out....but that you should NEVER venture out unprepared to some degree. Plenty of storage space in that truck for water, blankets, fire starters, first aid kits, small shovel, flares, etc. Lots of people have died over a "wrong turn", shortcut, or little side trip. And then the nanny state steps in and starts closing off everything for the sake of "public safety and habitat protection" every time it rains or snows. Or we get to hear "amazing survival story" of how some yuppie got himself and his girlfriend stuck in 2' of snow in the new Jeep Compass and they survived for 3 days by eating snow and sticking hot rocks warmed up in a tin can in their coat pockets. :annoyed:

    Don't be that guy.

Cut all soy from your diet, and get some real tires. Or just let your wife drive.

It's not the lack of skill that gets people grumpy, it's the act of blaming an inappropriately used feature of the vehicle. Not only does it make people facepalm, it shows that not much was learned.

Aren't there different speed settings for crawl control? Maybe if he had it at a higher setting it would have got him up? I have CC. Guess I should find out lol. I agree those tires are garbage. I for one wouldn't have gone without proper gear, another vehicle, and with just my wife and kids. Your last ditch effort would have been my first try lol. All in all, you made it home because looking at your rear bumper y'all ate the last bag of chips

Manual. It requires like, uber skills. You have to be like an off road savant to operate this properly. Like be able to shift and turn knobs and stuff.

Damn some of you guys are savage or just plain assholes who I would never want to associate with in real life

OP's wife gave him shit and I bet on the entire way home and for many more times to come. He learned some valuable lessons (hopefully)

We have all been newbs and as I'm sure he figured it while it was foolish for him to wheel alone especially with little ones in tow, he went out and did what the truck was meant for. He explored, took his family and built memories. I'm sure everyone who was there will remember that trip.

I commend him for doing it, you see so many stupid mall crawlers with thousands of dollars worth of crap just to be posers, this guy walked the walk.

If you live in socal feel free to dm if you want to check out the local trails and off the road sites to explore

Titling your video/thread as CC failed implies you're blaming the system. That's how I interpreted it.

SoCal has plenty of mud available if you know where to look. Most of my mud experience comes from living in VA for 8 years but the picture below was from this past weekend.

Decent tires and airing down is the first step. A winch is ALWAYS a great option but again may take practice/experience to get it to work depending on location or terrain. Some traction boards may have been useful in this situation. They are hit or miss but better than trying to find rocks. The chain device that @ColoradoTJ posted up would have likely helped and seem interesting. Snow chains may have done the trick if that's all you had. Or just don't travel alone until you're prepared and confident you can get out of 90% of situations with yourself and your gear.

Worst case, having some emergency gear for the family if you had to stay the night and temps REALLY drop. Food, water, fire starter, etc.

haha .. that bag of chips was just covering the grease i put on my tow ball. we towed our rv trailer, which is like 4500lbs 1000 miles roundtrip. so i now grease everything.

regarding MTS speed. i tried the highest settings in the video it did not help.

I did not floor it at the beginning because there were lots of humps and dips in the hill, i did not want to risk my suspension bottoming out and damaging something. i also wanted to see if the sacrifice i made for not getting a MT because you lose crawl control was worth it.

    o_O

Thats what happens when you go alone off road and not prepared, its not a joke.

Similar thing happened to me once, was very shitty time. If you had better tires, i think CC would work just fine.

    Good luck.

OP, don’t give up on crawl control yet, it will work for what it’s designed for. Your issue was more about the tires and mud. Also, for your first time out you did okay. Take it as a learning lesson, find a wheeling buddy and try again. As suggested, get some basic recovery and survival gear and have fun!
