Is this normal 4x4 operation?

I just bought a 2005 Tacoma, Auto Trans, 4x4, tow package, with 60K miles. When I switch into 4x4 Hi the light blinks but does not engage if the vehicle is moving. It switches fine if the truck is stopped or coasting, but not when there is any speed, i.e. 30 mph. I thought these were supposed to be able to switch to 4x4 Hi while at speed. This is my first Tacoma so I don't know if this is normal, or if I just bought a huge headache. Any input would be helpful, Thanks.

 

Yeah thats pretty normal. Mine won't switch into it if there is load on the drivetrain but if I let off the gas and coast it will switch on.

 

I would not want to try to make that switch at speed with the engine loaded...There isn't really a reason. It says you can do it up the 60 mph...but that if it does not work to slow down and do it again.
If it engages at slower speeds...I wouldn't worry.

 

Yup, they are finicky...try slowing down, coasting, braking, speeding up, turning, etc.

Thanks for the info, I feel better now. Also, since it is at 60K miles I would like to get the recommended services done. I don't have a service manual, can anyone tell me what maintenance is recommeded? I'm trying to take care of this one, and have the truck last longer than the length of the loan (never been able to do that before).

Mine has always popped into 4WD while driving... Naturally, I only engage when I need it, not just for giggles on the freeway! I would say I have popped it in at 50 mph when the pavement ended and I wanted maximum control.

 

it'll do the same for 4lo, will beep and sound like it's going to explode until it finally engages

 

I have switched mine in and out going 50-60 MPH no problems. Had it for almost 3 years now, an 08. Only on icy roads though, I do let off the gas and it switches in and out just fine.

Because he's new... make sure we give complete answers... Like to go into L4 (LOW RANGE), you must STOP moving first, put the tranny into NEUTRAL (not PARK), then rotate the dial while pushing it in, from H4 to L4. If he gets the beep or the indicator blinks, he is not in L4.

True, it has been a while since I have used a truck. I must admit the last truck I had to get out in the mud and lock the hubs manually.

 

Same here...no problems switching in and out at up to 60 mph, but you might have to coast, speed up, or whatever to get it to lock in faster. It's so that the mechanisms can all mesh together without a torque differential on any of the shafts.
