If you rip the plastic crap out from behind the rear seats you'll have plenty of room for valuables. Then get a locking toolbox for whatever you put in the bed.

I have a Fold A Cover on my 19. It locks and you can access the front or rear sections independently. I have had nothing but trucks for more than 30 years. I haul stuff and need a bed. My wife has had nothing but SUVs. She hauls groceries and kids. Decide what you need the vehicle for, not what you want to come across as.

I'll guess you have a 4 door mine is an access cab I removed the center console between the worthless seats and made a plywood platform covered with carpet. It also is a long bed a full size truck cargo box fits length wise on the bed. I put wooden rails on the bottom to fit the groves in the bed bored a hole in the bottom and use a bed bolt to hold it in place so it can't be removed once it's locked.

What size do you have? Can you provide a picture? I bought 2, 15gal Sterilite at Target and they fit perfect side by side. I was wondering if there is a large one that can fit the bed horizontally instead of having two.

Some good advice on here. I can tell you one of the very first things I did was installing a cover.
It makes the bed a lot more useful for hauling everyday things like just groceries for example.
The right cover, a bed mat and a nice storage locker is great.
There is no perfect vehicle for everything but not much you can't do with a good truck like the Tacoma.

    None... yet.
If you need something truly secure and waterproof that will keep stuff from sliding around, look at lockable bed toolboxes. That’s the closest analog to a trunk for a truck.

The tonneau is plenty waterproof enough, and just about any one of them can be made to be pretty dry if you’re patient and use some weatherstripping. But there are enough little cracks and seams in the bed itself that you’ll never make it 100% dry.

In terms of stuff shifting around: the only time I’d leave a laptop back there is if we’re going on a trip and the whole bed is packed with luggage and shit, so there’s no place for my laptop bag to slide around. You can get cargo dividers or nets that help, but you won’t really get a real compartmentalized space unless unless you get a racking system or some sort.

And that leads to security: honestly, there are no truly secure tonneaus. Even the hardcovers can be popped open with a crowbar without a ton of effort—a buddy lost quite a few tools when some jackass popped his. They keep honest people honest but I wouldn’t trust any tonneau with valuables left overnight on a dark street in a neighborhood I didn’t know.

I have a soft tonneau cover and a cargo net, with ratchet straps and bungies at the ready behind the rear seats. That gives me like 99% waterproofness, it stops big stuff from sliding around, etc. And it was cheap... but it also means anybody with a box cutter can get into it pretty silently. I don’t leave anything remotely valuable in the truck overnight if I’m traveling. I usually travel with two laptops (work and personal) and a tablet, and I always make sure that’s locked in the cab if I go into a restaurant or something on a road trip.

Cheapo tyger trifold on Amazon. Soft so if they really want to get in they can cut it with a knife. Keeps my bed dry enough. Some leaking but not a big deal for me. OEM bed matt to keep stuff from sliding around. Must have imo.

in the same sort of corner.
I am not selling my truck anytime soon

I was thinking about a tool box large enough to place my tool bags in & a roll up tonneau cover.

I had very little thoughts on Tonneau covers until mine came with a factory OEM one. I love it and I haven't really been limited by it yet. I originally had intentions of getting a cap but I can make this work just fine.

With that being said, I'll use my small utility trailer for the larger stuff anyway.

I have a Peragon cover which I love. I added a little plasti dip around the side for an even tighter seal but with my stuff in a cargo box, everything stays dry and safe. Tell them Boozer McGuinness sent ya and you might get some% off. They normally have deals and sales going on all the time too. Made in America by Americans!

Thanks everyone for the great and some funny advice. I appreciate all of it. :) . I made the mistake of "leasing" a truck. First time leasing and owning a truck. I does come in handy for the trips to Home Depot, but I am pretty sure 90% of what I have used it for can easily be done in an SUV as well. I may buy a cover for the next year and a half of my lease, then sell that cover later before returning the tuck. I could "buy" it out at the end of the lease for 28K, but I will not ever lease again. I feel like I have basically "rented" the truck for a total of 17K over 3 years. How silly is that! I do have a paid off 2013 Honda accord that I use often and I love having "trunk space" there. But, I want to get some vehicle that makes the most sense to do some outdoor stuff with my kids, haul their bikes, trips to Home Depot, etc. Which is the initial reason I got this truck. But, now I am wondering what the best balance would be for my needs. My two kids will be driving in 4 or 5 years, so I wanted to get something for "me" soon and have it paid off soon, so I can save money to get them used cars later. I was thinking about saving as much money as I can, turn in my truck at the end of the least in a year and a half and buying a used 4Runner SR5 Premium or TRD Pro. I really want the leather and moonroof too. I could sell my Honda for what it's worth, then almost or nearly pay cash for a 4Runner that is 3 to 5 years old.

Thanks for all of the info and advice guys. I appreciate it.

If you are looking at used 4runners your should really take a look at GX 460's that just came off lease.

My roll cover is good enough.. This is my first truck as well. I dont really leave anything expensive just usually my work stuff/extra clothes/cables/shovel..etc anyway. I lock my tailgate always so i know its somewhat secure. Only fear i have is people stabbing it and whatnot lol but *knock on wood* hope it never happens.
