I miss having “trunk space” Thinkimg of getting a tonneau cover

I bolted a job site toolbox in the bed to use as a trunk. It makes a bit of noise due to the handles, but it is lockable and very sturdy.

 

That or GX470 which everyone knows is better .

As far as bed covers. I love my Truxedo brand roll up tonneau. It rolls all the way to the cab, giving you the whole bed. Was like $300.

 

i got a tonneau for this very reason. I throw everything the bed now and call it day.

 

If you could find a fresh off lease 470 then go for it! Make sure to toss those front brakes out though and put on some from a 460.

 

My current setup with the Plano tote, it’s normally locked/cabled to the bed and under my tyger roll up tonneau.
I had a full sized toolbox in there but it took up too much bed real estate for what I was using it for. I like being able to take the tote out if I need the whole bed.

 

If I could afford a 460 I definitely would get one. They are more updated for sure. I'll have to look into the frt brake upgrade thx.

 

If my family continues to grow more I may sell my Taco and get a nice low mileage example of a 470 and mod the hell out of it. We just took a 15 hour round trip road trip after Xmas to introduce our new born to my wifes side of the family, the 460 drives so nice compared to my Tacoma.

 

A Tonneau cover will be good enough to deter 99% of people that would steal from your truck bed. I have an MX4 and it is pretty darn waterproof. I mean obviously a small amount of water gets in, but I went on a long roadtrip in pouring rain and when I was moving I'd say basically nothing got into the bed. If you're truck is parked outside a small amount may get in the bed.

 

I have the Undercover Flex Tonneau cover on my Tacoma. Much like the Bakflip. Yes it leaks a bit and not worried about it since the box is composite material and has drainage at the front and back. The composite material will never rust and has more strength then the standard steel box.

 

This works well for me; both covered and water-tight storage.

 

I’d go with a low profile or flush mounted tool box and a trifold cover

 

If you want security and good water resistance (I say resistance because it is almost impossible to "waterproof" the bed of these) IMO go with a Diamondback cover. Stick with the SD version unless you can splurge for the HD. It can still haul about 400lbs on top of it if you ever need to, and as long as its installed properly I highly doubt you will ever see water in your bed other than condensation maybe. It comes with an extra strip to help keep water out from the cab side (I haven't installed it) to mitigate any water getting in. This will be a plus if the neighbors ask to use it, you can use the "well it has a cover on now so I can't haul much". Throw a pop n lock in your tailgate and you're set my friend. You can even add in a shelf from Diamondback to keep anything you want off the floor of the bed. If you don't already have one, pick up a bed mat. Number 1 upgrade for sure!

Get a bed mat and nothing will slide back there.
If you’re looking for a cover don’t get a soft one, someone could easily cut through it if they wanted.

 

I forgot to add that you can find good deals on toolboxes and bed covers on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace. Lots of 2016 and newer tacos have been leased/sold and guys take that stuff off and sell it before returning/trading it in.

Have you done anything to make it harder to steal? A locking tailgate would help but I'm hearing a ton of negative stuff about the pop n lock failure rate.

No and fortunately never had a issue. Crime is very very low around here, of course it could happen to anyone, but most folks I know have been fortunate.
