Found this the other day too, not a Tacoma but an old Hilux that this guy TDI swapped and made a whole series on the build

So my question is, why TDI? Why not go with reliability rather then a little bit more power and diesel. Also, are you running a stock setup with Ko3’s and so fourth?

Well you see, the tdi is reliable. and has more power (tq) than the 3.4...… I need to dyno the truck but I shot for 350FT/LBS torque/160HP to the wheels at 2500rpm.... (the 3.4 doesn't make power until 4500 rpms which is shit) Engine has a GT1856 VNT turbo (2.5' stainless mandrel bent exhaust by myself, 2.5'' Intercooler and pipes, large nozzles and a tune from Malone tuning. In my eyes, after 1000 miles in Baja, 20,000 miles since the conversion, and multiple trips to places it shouldn't have gone..... I have the reliability and the power I was seeking. You seem to have the wrong idea about tdi….

Oh and I forgot my favorite part of the build, 28MPG average with hard-shell RTT (my company makes and is releasing the tent to the public in 2020) and loaded for long distance adventures! For those that are wondering I am from NC and am currently out testing the tent in CA.

Sounds like you should start a build thread @Sirmeeps i think I’ve only ever seen one or two other diesel swap first gen build threads on here. People would love to see more pictures and info about it. Very cool!

Awesome, I junked an old tdi for the transmission to swap into my daily driver, 2004 Jetta wagon with the slushbox auto. I have the engine disassembled with the intentions of swapping it into something. A first gen looks like the perfect setup!
