Is the Subaru tweeter mod worth the $100???

I wonder if some of the perceived benifit depends on your ability to hear high frequencies? A couple of days ago, my dad asked why my truck didn’t have a door “beep” when I opened the door. As the door was screaming “beeeeeeeep” (which drives me crazy) I pointed out that was beeping at that moment. He could not hear the door beep. I suspect he would not hear the benefits on the Subaru tweeter. I hear the tweeter as a significant improvement and have always been able to hear very high pitches.

 

Take your Dad to Costco and get the free hearing test. They also have inexpensive aids that are quite good. As someone who recently did the same (somehow have hearing loss in one ear) I can tell you that it's pretty damn amazing when you put that thing on and can hear clearly again. And I have yet to have anyone say a word about it after 6 months of use.

My fiancee's brother passed away a couple of years ago. We were visiting his family's house this summer, and I mentioned some upper level hearing loss. His widow said, well would you like to try Bob's old hearing aids? He got em at Costco but never wore them much.

I did try them out (after a thorough alcohol cleaning of course). They were OK. I would like more tweakability though.

I did get some Bose Hearphones recently--really cool product that can be adjusted to cancel out noise very well, or to enhance it. GREAT for watching TV--I can keep the sound really low and hear it just fine. Also good for crowded venues. The only downsides are the cost--MUCH cheaper than prescribed hearing aids though--and the fact that they're kind of bulky. Not a problem in a dark theater or crowded coffee shop, but you're not going to wear them on a first date with a lady, if you want a second date...

Back OT my semi-informed opinion is that the high frequencies are mainly responsible for directionality of sound and creating the soundstage. That's why adding a decent tweeter, either in the dash position or as a 3-way in the doors, is so helpful.

For me; yes, the tweeters are worth the price. I have a Kenwood 7706s that can push the tweeters well... sounds great.

 

I was helping a friend at work with speakers for his car. I noticed something about the Kicker DS speakers that I put in my truck. They use neodymium magnets as well, only compared to factory, a lot more of i. I know this is an old post, just thought that was interesting and would share.

 

That big magnet on the Kicker is just a normal ferrous magnet from outward appearance. Maybe the neodynimum is in the tweeters?

 

You really should take them in and get them adjusted for your hearing loss by the audiologist. Bob probably has hearing loss at different frequencies and level's than you.

 

Totally agree. Maybe if you do the dash replacement and keep the stock doors, but do the doors.

 

Upgraded the tweeters and the lower door speakers. Very noticeable improvement, especially at higher volumes.

 

I appreciate the mild improvement in the trash ass stock speaker system. The new tweeters made the sound system acceptable to modern standards

 

Hey all, I've got my door panel disassembled and the factory tweeter removed with the Subaru tweeter in-wait, but the plugs differ a bit...the gray one in the below pic is from the existing wiring, the 2nd pic is of course the Subaru plug. Checked with a local car audio shop for an adapter, didn't have one but they suggested T-taps (which I've read isn't the safest). Should I just cut into them and hardwire, or do you know of a cleaner method i.e. custom plug on Amazon/elsewhere?

Yes, it was worth the $100 upgrade to me. The sound is is much better in my opinion. I first installed the tweeters, tested, then installed front door rockford fosgates. Rear door speakers are next.

 

Did anyone try the 35 dollar speakers? I am thinking of rolling the dice just to see what I get?
