I'm shopping around for pet insurance. I used to have Nationwide but the transaction of reimbursement is so slow and they can only cover a little.

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks

One can never have too many light bars.
My friends use Healthy Paws and like it. I have Nationwide and yeah it took 4-6 weeks for payment for the one time I had to file a claim. The doge just turned 5 so I don't wanna risk dropping them and not being able to get coverage somewhere else.

We have two dogs that have both needed surgeries in the last year. Our golden is allergic to everything and needs high end dog food.

Our vet is great and does not charge as much as expected.

I have searched a lot and all pet insurance seems to be a waste of money. It's like a pyramid scheme.

The monthly cost would take years to cover the most usual things our doggies might suffer.

We spoke with our vet about pet insurance, as we have 3 dogs.

They suggested we simply open a savings account, and put what ever we want for a monthly or bi-weekly into that savings account. Be your own insurance company.

That way you are never told that something is not covered, or only covered for 80%. You choose wtf you want.

It has worked out perfect. We have been doing it for over 3 years now.

The dogs have quite the savings account. They lent me some $$ to buy an ARB bumper. Just upped the monthly payment to them to get it payed back. :cookiemonster:

After many rescue dogs, I decided to get what I've always wanted - a Bernese Mtn. Dog. The AKC registration came with a month of free dog insurance. But the insurance company bombards me with emails - it's about to run out, etc. Can't tell from any of their emails what it costs. With past dogs I have always ponied up when something was needed, and when this free month of insurance (with very limited coverage) runs out, that's going to be it. The idea of a dog savings account strikes me as a good idea.

    Congrats on the new pup!!
I just got a rescue too
Free month of pet insurance, I did sign up for the pet insurance it’s 36$ a month with a 3000$ cap they reimburse 90% of bill
    after 50$ deductible.
    Not really that great

After much thought I’ll probably cancel and just do a savings account.
She has her first vet appt Friday
I’ll see what the outcome is before I cancel.

The AKC referenced insurance co. only paid for minimal catastrophic things, and even then there was a cap. I'd go back to the breeder if any of these not gonna happen things show up before I tried to do that on my own with the pet insurance. It didn't cover anything for a routine vet visit for vaccinations, or wellness checks, or tick and flea meds, or any other expected routine kinda stuff.

I have had pet insurance since about 2010 and I will share my experiences.

In 2010 I had a 7 year old Boston Terrier that was my absolute favorite thing in the world. She had never had a single health issue and had never even been to a real vet, just a walk in vaccination clinic for annual shots. Since she was getting older I was starting to worry that something could happen and I didn't want to ever have money spent on the dog be an issue with my wife that had shall we say, less of an attachment to the dog than I had so I signed up for Trupanion Pet Insurance. About a year later our Boston started to show signs of soft pallet and breathing problems. A few vet visits later and surgery on the her pallet and nares and many nights in the ICU and we spent close to $10k in vet bills. Insurance reimbursed about $8500 of that taking a lot of the sting out of it. A few years later she developed a small lump on her back leg, biopsy came back as cancerous and that was another surgery followed by a several days in the ICU and another $5000 which insurance picked up a large portion of. Overall in the last five years of that dogs life we sent around $25k and insurance made the decisions always easy when we were already stressed out enough about our dog being ill.

After our Boston passed we got two French Bulldogs. I went to sign them up for Trupanion insurance and was shocked at the quote, it was more than double what I had been paying for my Boston Terrier. So we instead went with Healthy Paws Pet insurance. We have had similar results with Healthy paws and they have identical coverage as trupanion. Just this last week our bulldog ruptured a disc and had surgery and procedures that so far has amounted to over $17k, healthy paws will be reimbursing us $14.5k of that. In total since 2010 between all of our dogs we have been reimbursed more than $50k in vet bills. You could say I am a firm believer in pet insurance.
