Sleeping Platform

Hey there, I recently bought a 2014 Toyota Tacoma and I'm looking to build a platform in back for camping and stuff. I found the discussion below very helpful and will likely go with the OP's design, however I have a question that I don't think was addressed yet:

For the cross beams that fit into the 7" wide notch would you go with a 2 x 6 or a 1 x 6? Most descriptions I've read are suggesting 2 x 6, but it seems like a 1 x 6 would be better because then it would fit flush with the notch and have the rest of the bed layout to support the platform as well. Whereas with the 2 by 6 the platform would only be supported by the two beams and not the rest of the outline of the truck bed. What do folks think?

I think it will work out well, heres my set up. Drilled in some snowboard racks, fits two boards nicely.

Thanks, one of my buddies convinced me that 2by 6 is the way to go and pointed out it may be worth it to actually add one or two additional 2by 6's at the notch (one cut of 10" and the second cut 8") to elevate the platform and allow more room for storage underneath. I can probably afford to do this because I have the ARE MX which is 5 1/2' higher than the top of my truck.

 

Ah, ya with my set up It doesnt leave a whole bunch of headroom unfortunately
