If I buy kings or fox shocks without any tune, will they ride really stiff?

I am in the market for kings or fox shocks for my 3rd gen. Not sure if I need to cough up more money to have the shocks tuned before I put them on (ex: send them to accutune off road). Do these off road shocks normally ride really stiff? I will mainly use the truck for daily driving...I just really want fox or kings.

IMO, my standard-tune Kings feel much than stock for daily driving. Just make sure you pair them with higher quality leaf springs in the rear -- I'm currently running ICON RXTs, Option 1.

Thanks for reply. I was under the impression that I would only need to upgrade stock rear leaf springs if I am putting more weight in the bed. No? Im not planning to put more weight in the rear.

You're going to want/need aftermarket rear leaf springs to provide a lift that matches whatever lift height you add in the front. For me, I added about 2.5" up front, so I needed leaf springs that would add just under 2" in the rear.

kk, thanks. I was planning to just level it out and keep stock tires. Kinda like a TRD pro set up but with slightly better shocks.

Why?? If you 'just want them' then whatever go for it. Otherwise you may find other options that will save you a lot of money.

But to answer your question directly, if you buy P/N's designed for these trucks, the factory valving should be fine.

In that case, I wouldn't go with the Kings or Foxes. They are WAYYY overkill for simple leveling purposes, and you'd actually have to dial them down to only level out the front. They are seriously way too expensive and capable for what you're trying to accomplish.

Just get some 6112 or 5160 Billsteins and call it a day.

This isn't true. They are set for a level stance right out of the box. In fact, they are intended to be direct OEM replacements with no additional parts and they do exactly that perfectly. That being said most do use them to lift in conjunction with other parts and they work well for that too.

To OP, assuming you get the right Tacoma specific Kings they are tuned specifically for Tacoma's by King themselves. There is no need to alter the tune unless you have particular requirements.

I guess I never realized they'd normally arrive from the factory at their lowest height settings. Mine were set to a specific number of visible threads for me. Thank you for that correction.

That said, if all someone cares about is on-road performance and leveling, there are better and less expensive options available IMO. The Kings and Foxes are not designed with on-road performance in mind.... unless you plan to rail through curbs and potholes at high speeds on a regular basis? That's some serious mall crawling...lol

had to send my 2.0 fox rear in to get revavled, they were to stiff for me but my 2.5 front feel okay. Running icon txt leaf. So maybe it’s best to buy them then send them in if you’re not happy because some people seem to be happy with the stock setup

If you buy from accutune they’ll tune them before they even send them to you. And, if your set up ever changes, you can send them back and they’ll tune them again for free. I’ll agree a new leaf pack will help with ride. You can get one made to be stock height but much smoother ride, I recommend deaver

Not quite the lowest. Mine arrived with 2-3 threads showing. I believe the lowest setting would be very close to the stock rake.

I don't disagree here but there's no denying Kings do still ride very good on road (by design, King knew who the majority of the buyers would be) and if the price is not an issue and the OP wants them, for whatever reason, there should be no problems and the result will be better than the cheaper alternatives.

If you want to run King shocks just because you want them then go for it. IMO and this is only my opinion, it would be a total waist of money for what you are trying to accomplish. If you don't plan on doing any off roading you will never know the difference between King or Fox and a set of Billestins. But of your heart is set on Kings and you can drop the extra money on them then go for it.

I got extended travel FOX IFP and the factory configuration sat a little less than 2" higher with a factory bumper and splash plates. That would be roughly in the middle of the travel window with an extra inch of travel over stock, so I think that's the intention.

Generally I figure unless you're planning to tune shocks FOX/King/ADS/Icon/etc are just visual candy. The ride will probably be better using shocks and springs matched and intended for your use from OME. Just my opinion, though.

I know, its stupid. But I just really want Kings or Fox shocks. Won't ever use them to their true potential. yolo, I guess??

I was looking into Accune but from the replies from other posters...it seems I don't need to use their services if I am purchasing a suspension set up deigned specifically for the tacoma (which I will).

Now, the only real question that I have left is the purpose of putting in a "add a leaf" in the rears or just keeping it stock. Do I need to completely change out the leaf springs or add a leaf if I am just going to level the truck and will not be carrying heavy gear in teh bed?

No need for an AAL. The stock rear springs will be fine.

Yep exactly. They’ll still change the stock tune and it’ll be better than any off the shelf option. And I stand by my statement of getting new leafs.
