Looking for a little info here.

Just got a pop and lock for my 2019 Tacoma. Looks like the weather here in the northeast may not be bad tomorrow, so I'm thinking of spending a little time on New Years Day installing it.

My question is which wires should it be spliced into on the PASSENGERS side of the truck? I'm fairly certain of which connector it is but what color wires?

I want to go to the passengers side because it looks a little easier to get the wires into the cab on that side and then I'll have to hit the unlock twice to open the tailgate. I can't see the need to lock and unlock the gate every time I get in and out of the drivers door.

I called pop and lock tech and they were very nice but not real helpful with what color wires it should be spliced into.

They said green and blue but that's for the drivers side splice. I've seen videos that showed green and red on the passengers side but I want to make sure I get it right.

Thanks for any help and Happy New Year to all!!

Just installed mine last week. Took longer than normal because I took apart the backup camera wire loom and stuffed the popnlock wires in there to keep it OEM looking at the joint between the tailgate and bed. Other hardest part was getting the wires into the cab. I tried to use something small to poke through the boot but that was too frustrating.

Thanks but I’ve seen the plug and play wiring setups and I can’t see spending the extra $$.

I’m perfectly comfortable making the splices and I could even get out my test light and figure out which two wires it is. Just thought I’d save a little time and ask some folks that had already done it for help.

    Thanks though!

As others have said, there are many instructional videos on Youtube that show how to connect to the passenger side instead of the driver side, which is how the instructions from Toyota are written. And the reason some people want to connect to the passenger side, is because they do not feel the need to unlock the tailgate everytime they unlock the driver door! For me, I went a step further, as I didn't see the need to unlock the tailgate at ANY time, unless I wanted to get in the tailgate! I searched for a switch to mount on the dash, and guess what? Pop N Lock actually sells such a switch! It was designed for people who wanted a popnlock but didn't have keyless entry. But it was perfect for me, as I just wanted to unlock the tailgate when needed, which for me, is hardly ever. In any case, I made a video documenting it, which includes part numbers for the switch. Here it is:

I spent $15 and did this
    https://youtu.be/2mbn52sB5oc
The guy is a bit of a hack, but I ordered the actuator, had wire, soldered instead of tapped into factory wire, used wire loom to armor against cuts, and it works beautifully.

Thanks for all the advice and help everyone.

Installed the pop and lock today and everything went smoothly. Took about 2 hours but mostly because I’m a little OCD too and had to open up the factory wire loom between the tailgate and the truck to tuck the pop and lock wire inside for a neat factory look.

Went to passenger side of truck and used
t-tap wire connectors (these are much better than the scotch locks included with the kit) to tap into red and green wires. Green on truck to green on pop and lock and red on truck to blue on pop and lock. Works perfect! Toughest part of the whole install was running the wire along the frame.

    Love this accessory!

For those that have this mod... Does the tailgate remain unlocked when driving off? I'm a bit concerned that it the tailgate will open when driving unless you lock it with your remote key.

    1) I’ve never in my life had my tailgate open while driving.
    2) the Pop n Lock works off the power door locks. Mine lock when I drive away. Your tailgate should do the same.

If your tailgate has opened while you were driving, I would say you have issues with the latching mechanisms and if the handle is locked or unlocked would not make any difference. All the pop and lock does is enable or disable the handle on the tailgate from operating the latch mechanisms.

I might be thinking of something wild but, what if something causes the latch to open with the lock disabled after you hopped in without pressing the remote lock?

Again, another reason to go with the separate switch that I talked about in my video. It is made by popnlock and you can mount it anywhere you want, but I mounted mine on the lower dash. It looks like it came with the truck.

I don’t think you understand what the Pop & Lock does. It doesn’t actuate the tailgate handle, it just remotely locks/unlocks the tailgate.
Your tailgate is not going to just open itself, with or without the Pop & Lock.

This is right on. But to detail it a little more, the popnlock unlocks and locks the locking mechanism inside the tailgate, but does NOT have anything to do with opening or closing of the tailgate latches that actually hold the tailgate in place. To elaborate on this a little further and to corroborate another comment here, if one DID accidentally "hit" the button on one's remote, to unlock the doors and consequently, the tailgate lock, this ALONE would NOT OPEN the tailgate, but simply unlock the lock mechanism itself.
