After reading the entire Mega thread, I am seeing primarily just Auto trucks talked about here.

Anyone have experience or suggestions regarding a '17 DCSB V6 MT6 running 33"s, and either 4:88 vs 5:29's?

My local speed limit is 55mph, but I do wander up into Washington a few times a year on a 7hr one way trip. Speed limits are like 70-75mph on a lot of the route. Curious if the 5:29's will kill my MPG on those trips or not with the added RPM.

Also, don't plan to load my truck down with heavy armor, as I like to keep my rig as light as possible and tow a small off-road trailer with the extra camping/kayaking gear.

    Thx in advance.

    MTs are a small minority.

Read my threads on the subject over the last few months. I even posted a MT poll.

Most MT folks will recommend 4.88:1. 5.29 would be great, you would probably love it for most everything except above 65 or 70mph. I went 4.88 and LOVE it. Truck is a torque beast now. Would I love 5.29 more? I might - 1-2-3-4..........probably could take off in 2nd with 5.29. But then when I get on a 45-50 mph highway, let alone, a 70 mph stretch - I'm glad I went 4.88!

Agreed. Have my new front clamshell and 3rd member being built by ECGS right now - 5.29s because I’m a 2.7 going for 315s.

I’d see no reason as a v6 guy to run 5.29 with 33s. 4.88s Would be PLENTY, and probably even suffice for 35s.

Larger tires will kill mpg more than gearing. I no longer bother driving over 70 even if the speed limit is 75-80.

As mentioned 4.88 seems to be the way to go for MTs that do a lot of highway driving. This is because of the .71 6th as opposed the the AT with a .58. If the bulk of your driving is local roads and off-roading then I would consider 5.29s as your crawl ratio will be improved but it will impact the top end.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
@BadgerBoy - hey bro, I know you were wanting some info on 4.88s vs 5.29s for you MT. This thread has a lot of info, but to give you an idea Pablo went with 4.88s and has enjoyed his decision.

Does anyone have the re-gear RPM ratios chart or know what post shows it?

Would like to see the difference in top end speeds between 4:88 vs 5:29 gearing.

For my application I want better drivability and occasional use on forest roads during hunting seasons.

Maybe a minimum lift and upsize of tires but nothing over 33”, thanks.

My old '94 Pickup (Hilux) automatic V6 came with 4.88s with 31x10.5x15 tires from the factory. All this discussion?

Thanks for your input. Sounds like the 5:29's would be fun but not practical in my configuration. I will continue to watch these threads on the subject. Fortunately I am not in any hurry to swap at this moment.

Gearing (if properly matched for new tire size) will bring mpg back up. Not back to stock obviously with the added weight, but it will go up.

I’m just like you - MAX I’m hitting 75mph. I don’t get why someone with a lifted truck and large tires “need” to go 80-90 on the freeway lol. Buy a Honda to commute fast aha.

Thanks, now I just need to figure out all those entries, lol, all new to me.

This one thing I do know is the current gearing is almost unbearable, no fun to drive!

I’ll assume you’re AT - double overdrive gears + 3.92 (I think) gearing makes for that unbearable driving.

I’m stock 3.92 right now with the 5spd 4cyl on 285s so I feel your pain! Luckily gears are coming and IMO the first upgrade anyone should do to accommodate larger tires other than chopping/cutting. Shitty gas mileage, drivetrain stress, reduced performance, etc is not worth being cheap.

Yes, auto transmission. So 3.92 gears?

I'm trying to decide which direction I should go (4.88 vs 5.29) and was hoping to get some advice.

My setup: Auto Trans. 3" lift, 33" tires, roof rack, bed rack with cargo basket, sliders & IFS skid plate. Low profile front bumper is currently being fabricated and will be installed with a 10,000 lb winch. I also intend on adding more armor under the truck and possibly a rear bumper and I could see myself going up in tire size. No plans for a RTT or hard shell.

This is my daily driver and would estimate my driving at 65% city 35% highway. Would I benefit more from 4.88 or 5.29 gears? Thanks!!

Agreed. Besides the OV tune, no need if going 5.29s. Plenty of gear for the 3.5 even with all that weight.

    35s? Sure, throw in OV.

OP, Please keep in mind you’re driving a heavily weighted truck with a naturally aspirated, underpowered (but overbuilt for reliability) V6. It won’t be a rocket.
