I love it but thinking of selling to get a rack to better carry kayaks.

Get an over softopper rack. @SOS CONCEPTS makes one. @Mobtown Offroad makes one.

 

Dissent Off-road also makes one that I'm hoping to have someday.

 

How long are your kayaks? Not the best pic but these are 10’ and fit on a roof rack over the cab just fine. I’d go that route before ditching the softopper

 

I run 12' Kayaks on OEM roof bars with Thule J-racks in the same manner. They sit high enough to not interfere with a softopper.

 

Just got mine put on today!

 

So I'm not sure my Softopper likes higher speeds on the freeway. My cabside window flap keeps untucking from in between the cab and the bed and makes for a lot of noise

 

You have to put velcro on that part or the snap. I put velcro that they supplied and it has no issues whatsoever even in super gusty days.

 

Alright, alright, alright ... haha. I didn't ditch it. I got a truck bed extender for the time being until I find a rack I like.

 

If anyone ever needs to remove the Velcro from the tailgate and then clean up the residue, do yourself a favor and just trade the truck in. That stuff is no joke! Holy crap.

 

Exactly why I went with the magnets in this location. After seeing how gnarly that velcro residue was I was not about to slap that onto paint. Goo gone usually does wonders for me though.

 

I had to use acetone, and about one hour of elbow grease. I’ve since replaced with magnets and it works just as well.

 

Jeeeez. Sounds like a fun time . Haha. But yeah the magnet mod is well worth it!

What magnets and where and how did you place them?

 

So on the softopper side, is the “loop” side of Velcro.

I took a strip of the “hook” side that spanned the width of the back window. Then used a magnet strip and stuck that and the “hook” side together. No pics handy and hope it makes sense

 

So I used some small round Neodymium magnets from the hardware store. They are about 1.5” in diameter so the slide into the gap between the Velcro on the topper and the outside fabric. I ripped the seam about 4 stitches wide, slid 5 magnets in and spread them across the span of the area that hits the tailgate and sewed the 4 stitches back together. Took about 5 mins.
