So I’ve been around some of these newer Toyota engines since we have a few in the family and in my opinion they’re all a little noisy. Now being here on the site I’ve read up on a few guys saying that the 3rd gen Tacoma engine is a bit noisy at idle, but how much noise is to much noise? So far I’ve been loving this truck! Just not sure if this is a problem or it’s normal. Curious as to what you guys think of mine. Any help would be great thanks!

Mine sounds like a fucking diesel. 3k miles.

Runs just fine and I get about 18-19mpg average. 2019.

They are noisy. And so was every other vehicle I've owned over the last decade. They click, they sound like a clutch fan is constantly engaging. And everytime, I'm told it's normal. How did we come to this? Lol.

It's normal for GDI engines, I thought the same when I heard mine with 1k miles on it.

These engines have a dual injection system, port and direct. This is the engine running the port fuel injectors through a cleaning cycle. This cleaning cycle prevents gunk buildup in the intake runners and intake valves that are common on direct injection engines. It is very common after driving and coming to an idle. It can very in duration from a few seconds to several minutes.

If it makes you feel better, my Lexus IS350 sounds very similar to my truck and that video with the hood up. It has the same basic 3.5 2GR under the hood, just tuned differently. With the hood closed and sitting at idle, all you hear is the constant ticking that is the injectors. It is very normal for these engines so don’t be concerned. They are excellent, well proven engines when taken care of.

That's the beautiful sound of not having to pay money to have the valves cleaned later on. I actually like it.

My Lexus has pretty significant deadening under the hood and on the insides of the fenders. That stuff must make a difference because like I said, with the hood closed, you hear the ticking and not much else. No where near as loud as taco, but open the hood and they are pretty similar.

Thanks, i was also concerned as my 2020 makes the same ticking noise. I just came from owning Jeeps where the ticking noise on the pentastar engine is not a good thing so i was getting a little worried.

I think some people was wanting a diesel in the 3rd gen and didn't get one. So, Toyo decided to make it sound like one. :D
