Just throw a winch on the front of that thing and call it a day. Cheap and easy. This truck is limited by more than the lack of locker. Leaf spring rear and is gonna limit traction since it will hop. The front ifs doesn’t give much travel. And those ko2 are meh in anything wet

X2, this sounds like lack of experience. The real test to this theory would have been having the wrangler driver drive your rig up the hill, he would have made it in your truck.

Get some snow tires. KO2s suck in snow.

Probably been said multiple times but,
1 dedicated set of winter rated tires studded if you like
2 weight in your truck, I throw a canopy on mine during winter
3 set of chains for extreme
If you get stuck after that give up lol

Honestly it will have to do alot with the driver and the tires you run. KO2's in my opinion are garbage and yes i've ran a set before i formed my own opinion. i have a 2012 TRD Sport and the only time i was ever stuck was when i still had street tires on it. i had KM2's which i never got stuck in as well as the Hankook Dynapro MT's. Tire choice will make one of the biggest differences out there. i eventually got a rear locker but for me tires was the biggest factor.

Maxtrax, I was a UPS driver in the north west ,I was always getting stuck in the snow even with chains. I tried a pair of maxtrax, never got stuck again. I do a lot of winter driving in Montana, I’m always helping people get unstuck with my maxtrax.(don’t leave home without them).

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
First, I’m a fan of KO2s. Ran on all my trucks including all my company work trucks. But they are just what their name implies. All Terrain. They work ok in all terrains. Not great in any one. There are other tires better in specific terrains. Better tires for snow. Look at what terrain you’re on most. Drive the truck everyday on the road? Then a road tire. Muddy conditions? Then MTs.

    1. Research tires first and get what you need that will work for the type of off roading you do.
    2. If you do any off roading at all, you need a winch.
    3. Get some type of lockers. The video below shows what is available.

As has already been said, snow/ice are tough and tire selection is key. I got stuck in some fresh snow once because I slowed down too much and my skid plate sat on top of it and took all the weight off the front wheels. Crawl control and diff lock didn't help at all, and tire selection did not make any difference. Snow really is it's own animal. As far as lockers/etc, the best investment you can make is a winch. I think a winch should come before literally anything else. That means street tires and no lift or armor. Skill, experience, lockers and good tires can get you into a lot of situations, but it can't always get you out. Especially if you are alone. And definitely spend the money for a good one. I started with a TJM (Chinese) which kept failing. They kept sending me new parts for free, but a winch is the kind of thing you need to know is going to work. If you want a minimalist mounting solution there are hidden mounts like CBI. If you want a bumper, the sky is the limit.

I might be the odd man out reading all the other posts but I loved my ko2s in the snow. They did better then my designated winter studded tires and a hell of a lot better then my falken wildpeaks. Maybe the difference is the ko2s were on my older lighter Toyota’s. I’ve had ko2s on a 91 standard cab, 2000 4runner, and 2004 Tacoma. And I’ve had the falkens on a 4th gen 4runner (my wife’s rug) and my 13 Tacoma and we are both not impressed with the winter driving ability of the falkens. My next set of tires will be ko2s.

I think the KO2s were phenomenal when they were brand new on ice below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

From my understanding lockers wont keep you from getting stuck, theyre used for getting you unstuck.

Hold on, what does this line in the OP mean? You are sure you were in 4wd right? I personally have not had trouble in the snow in 4wd yet, even in deeper stuff. 2wd is where I run into issues in snow.
