The Blower Motor Replacements Thread

Hi Folks

My 2nd gen Tacoma blower motor is making some chirping noises. As many threads indicate, you can go in, clean out the brushes and those pad things, and you can turn the screws on the assembly to adjust how the rotor sits in the stator to remove chips and stuff. The short story is that the adjustments did not address the issue, and the entire blower motor assembly is not that much to replace, so I started on my journey to replace it.

The first thing to mention is that the OE part from Toyota is like $150, which is not that much. However, you can buy one from RockAuto for $29. So I bought one.

It was loud, not chirpy, but the sounds of a loud motor are annoying to me. The $29 blower motor, which was loud, was ULTRA-POWER 700188, from Rock Auto. I am sure it would be fine for some drivers, but for me, it was too bothersome.

I returned it yesterday and await the arrival of the replacement, a

$87 VDO PM9297 Blower Motor

VDO PM9297, also from Rock Auto. That one costs $50.

If I install that one and it is also unusually loud compared to the OEM Delphi blower motor, I will return it and buy the Toyota OE blower motor.

Please feel free to reply to this thread with your own attempts to replace the blower motor. Descriptions of sound and long-term use are especially welcome. I wish that this thread existed before I bought that cheap-o ULTRA-POWER unit for $29!

I would personally just go with OEM. Buy once cry once. Saves hassle of returns and there's no question it would be Toyotas part that's the problem.

 

I'm curious to hear your thoughts. I've dealt with similar, bought an el-cheapo from Amazon for a Honda and it was noticeably louder than the OE unit.

I've replaced the blower motor in my 4Runner and one of my Tacos with aftermarket. Both were loud and moved far less air then OEM. I ditched them and replaced with OEM and I'm happy.

 

I used a Toyota as well. It was a little over $100 on Amazon.

 

The VDO blower motor sold by Rock Auto also sucked. Sounded noisy. Returned it. Bought a Toyota OE one from the dealer for $140

 

Moral of the story: you'll likely be sorry with anything that is not OEM when it comes to blower motors.

 

I installed the $38 TYC from Amazon and am happy. Can’t really tell the difference. They look identical and sound/blow the same.

Can’t speak to longevity yet, but these are so easy to replace I’m fine if it only lasts a few years.

Since my OEM started making noise a few years in I’m not too sure about spending $150.

 

I had the infamous 'clickclickclick' from the old OEM motor, so I too just installed the TYC one from Amazon. At first I liked it - mainly because I didn't have to listen to the clicks anymore. But it definitely has more whine to it, which is starting to get to me. So I might try a new one soon.

Don't notice any difference in air flow.

I also had no luck with any method of dampening the chirps with my old motor. Just installed the OEM Toyota part (

$156 87103-04044 Genuine Toyota Parts - Motor Sub-Assy, Blow (87103-04044)

87103-04044) and it's super quiet. I hope the chirps never return.

 

I just ordered an OEM unit. The whine from this TYC is too much. At speeds 1 and 2 it's pretty noticeable. Hopefully the new OEM will last awhile before it starts clicking....

 

I too got an off brand Amazon blower because I didn't want to spend $150. Terrible investment. Loud and barely moves air. But I guess it does do the job - barely

 

Did the TYC start to make noise after a while? Mine is still normal/quiet after a few months. The unit looked identical to the OEM in appearance and quality.

 

I put a TYC blower motor on my sisters 05 Chevy Trailblazer in August of 2018, it’s still blowing along just fine. It’s a little bit louder than the factory blower, but it’s doing fine. Her factory connector was melted so I replaced the harness/connector and blower motor resistor with cheap aftermarket parts from eBay, the TYC blower motor came from Rockauto. My sister is happy to have air again, her connector was burned at the ground pin so she had no air at all until I fixed it. I put some dielectric grease in the connectors. I suspect that this repair will (or should) last the remainder of the life of this car.

I traded my 07 Tacoma with a bad connector that sometimes needed wiggling around to make the blower work. I planned to fix it, but never got around to it. I was going to use a TYC blower motor and an OEM resistor/connector on it if I had fixed it. The TYC in my sisters car has been good enough, especially given the price tag.

 

To all the people buying OEM motors: Isn't that the exact same thing we all have in our trucks that starts chirping?

 

Mine was not chirping, but would not run unless on high, or if i gave it a swift knock it would start spinning. I had first tried the replacing the resistor that many talk about but it didn't solve my problem. I bought an OEM from Amazon, I think around $130 ish. Been running fine for over a year now.

 

I have the tcy brand and it is loud on high even my wife asked what the noise was. I bought the truck used almost two years ago and I replaced the original because of the ticking sound. I might just buy the oem one now and save the other as a back up

 

with the amount of use it gets, I purchased and installed genuine OEM. The delta $$ was easily justified. No complaints.
