At about 126k miles on my 1st gen and it's time for an oil change. Not sure what the previous owner put in it and was wondering what has worked best for you guys?

    Thanks in advance!

I think it's only appropriate that we start the new year off with a "which oil" topic. Try a search first :)

Time to change the oil at 126k, eh? Hopefully you've changed the oil once or twice before this...

Go to the store and buy the most expensive oil they carry. Bonus points if it comes in bright colors or is a major sponsor of off road racing. Special order it if you have to in order to increase the cost a little more.

But seriously, just look on the oil fill cap for the proper weight, and go buy whatever oil is on sale. Change it regularly.

At least go for peanut oil for that higher smoke point.

You might consider a high mileage oil with 127k. The most important part is just changing it, and doing it on a routine cycle.

I purchased my truck at pretty much the same mileage. I don’t know what the previous owner had been running. I put in Valvoline synthetic for the first change under my ownership. So far, so good. Eventually I will probably start running a high performance synthetic.

Your profile info isn't specific as to 4x4 or 2wd but if it is 4x4 I suggest changing all fluids, engine 5w30, transmission, transfer case and differentials 90w. But buy drain and fill plug washers and remove the fill plugs FIRST.

Pull the dipstick see what the oil looks like. Go buy a 5/30 Brand name whichever is the cheapest and you’ll be fine.

For a domestic 120k miles is high mileage, but for a Tacoma that's just getting broken in. mileage stuff.

If it's not burning or using oil, it doesn't need that (more expensive) stuff. It doesn't hurt, but it's probably not helping either.

Truck will be happy with any fresh 5W30. Pick the one with the best price, coolest label, or whatever else makes you feel good about it

No one knows what 'works best' unless they send out samples for lab testing and change product every change.

Like all technologies oil has changed a lot in the last 17 years. And you don't have to use 17 yo specs, you can use modern specs.

If you are a 5k change nut, use a decent dino oil and filter.

If your usage and mental position will let you go 10k changes, use a decent synthetic and filter.

Personally on a 'new to me' vehicle of that mileage and unknown history, I'd put a good dino in and short cycle it to give things a bit of a bath if it was a bit neglected. And focus more on changing ALL the other fluids, as someone already mentioned. I'd then fill with my oil of choice, monitor for any consumption, and at the next change send a sample off to Blackstone Labs and see what they have to say about the health of the oil and engine. Then base my future OCIs/product based on those results. But that's just me.

5w30 weight, and Castrol is what I’ve ran for years. I swapped to pennzoil synthetic recently but I’m a bit ocd about maintenance lol. Any quality oil and a filter used in these trucks will be just fine.

Mine has had nothing else but Toyota oil at the dealers. I change mine about every 3-4000 miles and add "MOC Oil Conditioner" since new.
