I would like to get a repair order from an individual who had the "fix" done
And see a parts list and get a definite cause to this issue figured out .....

It can't be the whole system but most likely one component or two in a conjunction causing this

For instance i seriously have trouble believing that simply replacing the whole system with identical parts fixed the issue unless there is an updated part or a true fix

Again last thing I want is my dash /engine bay finger fucked in and out for a possible hit or miss fix

I have the same “issue” with mine. It’s not worth it to have it dismantled to me. Unless it worsens, it’ll be something I live with.

I agree dismantling could bring way more rattle noise.

Hello, I have less than 30 days with a new 2019 SR5 which has that Darth Vader sound. I called within one week of having it trying to resolve the issue which of course they said is “normal”. Even called Toyota HQ, but no resolution, since to them is “normal”. This “normal” noise was not disclosed and how can it be normal when I know of other Tacoma owners that don’t have that noise in theirs. It is definitely not normal to have this noise. Has anyone filed a formal complaint with the Atty General or BBB?

I was told by Toyota and the dealership it’s the expansion valve, but they don’t want to replace it.

Went to the dealer with this issue was told it was normal. Was also told that it could be an undersized AC compressor or low oil in the AC system but at the same time they "could not hear it" the entire experience made me lose respect for Toyota. I opened a claim with Toyota HQ they said they could not do anything unless the dealer hears something so I bailed out of that circus and have just lived with it. Pepridge farm remembers though when he goes to buy his next truck

I was just called by the Case Manager and was told it’s a “normal characteristic” but to keep bringing it up every time we take to service in case there’s a fix or a part replacement. So there’s an issue but they don’t want to admit it because they will have to fix everyone’s truck. I will be filing a formal complaint. They can’t be seriously telling me it’s normal, but to keep checking back for a fix.

Forget the warranty side of it just want it fixed and will fix it myself if a new part number turns up
Only trick to this the system is the new 1234 stuff

If it's the expansion valve give us the updated part number same goes for the compressor

I don’t think they have an updated part that’s why they are not willing to fix it.

When I bought my 2020 I test drove three different Off Roads. Two of them had it and one did not, so that's the one I bought. I've been using the AC here in Phoenix for the past few weeks and DAMN, after everything I went through with my 2018 it sure is nice to have a QUIET air conditioning system in my truck!

I had a friend that had new Tacoma with a clicking/looseness/slight slop in the steering wheel. Service said it was normal for the vehicle. He convinced the Service manager to take a ride in another brand new (same truck) off the lot. IT did not do it .... Told the service manager it's not "normal" and to fix it .... They did reluctantly .... Just FYI (Rag Joint was replaced and adjusted ...).

Thank you for posting this! I've been trying to figure out what this exact noise was for awhile now. I started to think it was related to the transmission. And trying to use search terms online kept taking me to discussions about the rear differential.

2019 Tacoma V6 with the manual HVAC. Truck has 5,500 miles on it right now and has been doing it practically since new. Bought the truck last December but haven't used the AC much until recently (had it set on AC back in January and it made the noise then).

Sometimes the ringing is really high pitched and goes for a 2-3 seconds and sometimes it's faint.

Tends to do it under load ~1,500 - 2,200 rpm anywhere from 32-33 mph, 42-45, and in the 50's.

When it's really high pitched it makes my ears ring. I don't have the "darth vader" noise.

My brand new 2020 4 Cylinder Tacoma is making this noise. I addressed this with the dealer when I was adding a hitch. The dealer told me the 2020 Tacoma 4 Cylinder makes weird noises normally. The sound I heard on page 2 is exactly what I hear. I’ll bring it up again when I go back for an oil change. Has anyone heard anything?

Just an FYI for any future viewers of this post. I brought my 2020 Tacoma to the dealership and the dealer was able to duplicate the sound three times. They called Toyota and they are aware of the issue on 2016-2020 Tacomas and is working on a fix. I was given a case number and was told to keep following up on future visits to see if there is a recall. I brought up this post and they advised that when they add lubricant to the compressor, it moves the sound to other places in the truck. I called Toyota after going to the dealership and they will follow up with me in two days.
