So after fueling up the other day and finding out the fuel door hinges are incredibly flimsy I started my truck and the low oil pressure light came. So I parked out of the way and checked the oil. not on the dip stick.....hmmmm....toyota has done every service so far on the truck with Toyota care up to this point....In a rush my girlfriend happened to be there with me so I had her take me to Napa and get oil. We return, put a quart in and get it back in the good zone on the dip stick. after inspection I can't find any leaks anywhere underneath can't smell any oil burning coolant looks good. so my question is has anyone else had this problem? and are the rings on a 2018 with 33K on it really gone bad? Im past Toyota care and did the 30K oil change myself "couple weeks later" after putting in that quart and reading perfect on the dip stick I drained a scratch more than 5 quarts out of the truck......

Does the truck emit blue smoke?

I would record after paying for a dealer oil change. Making sure its truly perfect. Most 3.5 Taco oil changes I do take 6.6 us quarts or 6.3 liters.

Your powertrain warranty is longer than 30k miles. It covers oil consumption but they need to document it after they do an oil change.

They are not known for this, any 2GR for that matter, the only thing that would cause oil burning is running no air filter and the cylinder walls pitting up with dirt.

(no smoke that I've noticed. Stocklocker)

(Bishop84) thats my next step is to have them do another oil change on it and then check it after a couple weeks and see if it continues to happen then bring it in to the dealership. Ive had a bit of trouble with this one so far its getting old. 3rd and 4th gear went out at 3K miles. Toyota warrantied it but incredible pain in the a$$ timing wise.

So you had the transmission replaced at 3-4000 miles? And it took 33,000 miles to find out about the fuel door?

Stupid question but do you ever check your oil between changes?

...and, did you check the oil immediately after the service center did the ToyotaCare? If you don’t have any evidence of oil leak/burn, then I would suspect the issue may have been inadequate post service fluid level... however, if you didn’t follow up and check yourself, then we don’t have a definitive answer.

It should be pointed out it is hard to check the oil on these trucks. I pull the dipstick, wipe it, and wait 15 minutes for the oil lining the dipstick tube to settle back into the pan for an accurate reading.

Are you sure it was a quart low?

It's got to be way more than just a quart low for the oil light to come on. And if you drained 5 quarts that means it had 4 to begin with. Again not low enough to suck the pan dry and turn the light on.

Something else is going on here. You're still under powertrain warranty, go to the dealer and tell them what you know.

I say it was low after it was changed last. Could be leaking out a gasket or main seal, but you would have drips. Could be leaking past a valve seal or rings, but you would have smoke. I really don't see it losing oil without symptoms.

My guess is dealer never put anywhere near 6.2 quarts in when you had it serviced. Dealerships are dangerous places. I know a guy who picked up his truck from dealer who had drained the oil and forgot to refill it.

witnessed a time when the techs forgot to put oil in the engine and let the lady drive home. she called about 12 minutes later with a blown engine at the light outside the dealership.

I am currently experiencing the oil burning on a 2018 Tacoma. In August the oil was bone dry, December the oil was bone dry and now 3 weeks bone dry again. This last oil change the oil light kept staying on and off. No leakage anywhere. I pick the truck up today for a two week oil consumption test. I guess for me to be continued. This is annoying and frustrated. They did do a software update on transmission because when oil is low at start of acceleration the transaction feel like it slips.

I've done 2 oil changes (in 18,000) in my 2018 TRD DCSB and no loss of oil to date. I change my own oil and check level a couple times between changes to help guard against or at least alert me to issues such as you describe.

If you do let the dealer change your oil I suggest you check the level when you pick it up.

Now that this old thread has been revived....was there ever an outcome? The GR engines (1,2 and 3) aren't generally oil burners

6.6 quarts? Manual lists 6.2 quarts (w/filter). I fill with 6.0 quarts and always brings to right near or at full level.

Friday post. BONE DRY???? in 3 month's, then again in 3 weeks. If it was burning that much (6 qt's) it wouldn't run very well, or at all. Bone dry it would be toast.
