Yeah the ground work is definitely set for a lot of nastiness to occur given the right circumstances. Society nowadays reminds me of the frog in boiling water fable.

lots of spying these days. automatic license plate readers, cell stingrays, and facial recognition camera's. Then stuff like OSINT(slightly changing my career to Cyber Threat Intelligence right now).

Hong Kong protesters are way ahead of us right now.

look at how they are taking care of tear gas. Place traffic cone over it and pour water down it. Smart!

Im honestly amazed people didnt know about using water to stop tear gas. Like people know to use water on people who have been exposed to it yet nobody seemed to put 2 and 2 together and use water to stop it at the source.

It is funny how much information people give companies without even thinking twice. Wireless thermostats are a perfect example (be it Nest, ecobee, ect)

Ive been slowly going through everything and ditching stuff that sells my info to the highest bidder. Ive been in IT for 10 years and am having to do some real leg work to figure out whats safe to use and whats not, I cant imagine how daunting it is for someone not involved with the industry.

Google is the beast I cannot shake, but I don't have faith in Apple as some folks seem to. Maybe Apple is a hair better.......but I don't TRUST them either.

I've worked for apple for a few years and am balls deep in their ecosystem. Them standing up to the SanDiego PD about unlocking a suspects phone made me feel better, but theyre bending to the will of the chinese government to keep market share over there so im conflicted. Overall they are the most transparent. As an aside, google had to scrap a project for **Armed AI-controlled predator drones** because half the engineers working on the project threatened to quit. Im 100% sure they either outsourced it or restarted the project with a black label because the US government was probably going to just point a fire hose full of money at the Google office if they pulled it off. So much for "Don't be Evil."

Well thats just it...they know 90% of people arent going to bother to even care. Both Amazon and Google have been caught listening to conversations with Alexa and the Google Home/Google Assistant. And yet you dont hear of anyone suddenly ditching them. Or just ask people to not use Apple or Google services on their phones....they wont give them up. Both companies have done a great job at slowly making it so once you start in their ecosystems that you wont want to leave or figure out other ways of doing things cause its not as streamlined.

Hey all, I've been combing this thread, searching for BLM or public lands for shooting. Are there good ones around the Tacoma or Olympia area?

    It's complicated.
Right. And Ama.zon & Google said that their devices weren't always listening, nor recording.

    Do you REALLY believe that?!

Yes, I believe that cops can't access your ring footage without consent, exigency or a warrant

Overblown. Voice recordings are explicitly stated to be available for QA and training. And G will show you exactly what's recorded in your profile.

    Back to shooting, though.

Don't think that's actually the case w/ google. Takes a lot of effort for public corporations and employees to gain security clearance.

"The reports that police can obtain any video from a Ring doorbell within 60 days is false," a spokesperson said. "Ring will not release customer information in response to government demands without a valid and binding legal demand properly served on us. Ring objects to overbroad or otherwise inappropriate demands as a matter of course. We are working with the Fresno County Sheriff's Office to ensure this is understood."

Sounds like their Public Information Officer still writes reports with a typewriter.

Not talking about those conversations but all the ones different whistle blowers from subcontractors have been bringing to light.

But you are right back to guns :)

They did though. Project Maven I think it was called. They were only part of the project though. Didn't renew the contract after employees complained. Google still provides services for it though just not development. Now it's some small startup that took over Google's contract. Startup was from the Occulus Rift company.
