As far as I can see, his commander should still be able to authorize TA. It looks like Top Up now subtracts from GI Bill. He should probably go to the Education center to confirm instead of talking with random soldiers. It’s possible he did and that’s what came of it, but from what I can see, it should still be covered.

My degree on active was a BS degree, mainly for promotions. Ended up not needing it, but had I decided to compete for CSM, it would’ve been a huge help.

very few people want to be near rangers when they're armed
then don't use it for college, take welding classes or machine classes, or use it to learn gunsmithing or motorcycles or something else fun

heck, go be a mechanic and work on stock cars and go over the wall on race day. it. is. free. money.

look, you can make money at anything bro. but you can't recover time.

the longer you wait, the more you place yourself at a disadvantage. you have a massive crew-served weapon at your disposal, ready to help you fight your way through life. all you have to do is sign it out of the arms room

Even something you want to learn, just to learn it for free. I debated welding just for hobby stuff. Hell the degree I’m doing now I have zero plans to use.

I finished my degree while on AD and transferred my GIB to my kids before retiring.

I work as a defense contractor now because, well... money.

if it falls within the capped rates you're good. outside that and you'll have to pay for it yourself or use the GI Bill

full disclosure: i paid for a lot of my after-core classes myself while i was in, i didn't want to use my GI Bill until I got out.
but my opinion is this: i can recover cash and ground lost. i cannot recover time. the sooner i got moving on what i felt i needed and wanted, even if it's not perfect... at least i was moving. at least i was making forward motion.

you can find some seriously-easy-to-qualify-for scholarships. hell, most schools have tidy sums just waiting for transfer students or new students. i used several that were reserved for purple heart recipients and their loved ones, and i used two that were just for service members. OK, so I had to give a speech and i decided to wear my class-a uniform. big deal, i've had to do worse at funerals. i got six thousand each time for tuition though

and even if you're fifty years old, go to the stupid orientations or job fairs. reps for scholarships are usually sitting in the wings just waiting to throw their cash at someone. and if they aren't, the orientation folks or VA office usually have scholarship info on-hand or hanging about.

it's not done for you, but it's stupid-easy

(Cap, i'm not talking to you, just adding to your comment. maybe someone else will read it and decided to move their ass a little)

I'd like to learn aluminum welding, Ive done my own minor welding to fix stuff. Its funny my first "summer job" was working for my school and we made these rebar stakes to hold down 6x6 beams around the swing set. Totatally unsafe by todays standards. basically a square piece of 1/8" steel with hole drilled in the middle and then we welded that about 1" down and drove them into the beams. Probably made 100 of them, I dont remember but the 1" piece of rebar would stick out of the beam then we filled the "box" around the swing sets with pea gravel. :rofl:I wish I had a pic, but they have been long since removed.

Oh yeah- Not to mention you get paid to attend. I even found out I got a kicker bonus when I went indef. Called to say I was getting over paid, they said nope- you get a few hundred extra a month as part of your reenlistment bonus. 20k in housing stipend to do something I’d have done anyways, isn’t a bad deal.

fucking this. read the rules and get ahead

i ended up looking like Andy Dufresne from Shawshank helping dudes sign up for school. the ed center folks are a huge help, you're doing it wrong unless you get to know them until they know you

the stuff you find on the internet is just the tip of an iceberg. go to an ed center and confirm or deny, at least have it explained
just like any other weapon, you're better when you learn the capability and limits.

Also while active- If you do online ed, make a point to avoid schools that fight accreditation every other year (think Devry- worthless now). I did Thomas Edison State University in the end. They are meh, but where they make up for it is the fact that they are primarily an actual campus. They are a university, and they offer open classes every month. Take one, if it’s easy, take another. If it’s hard, stick to one class.

Agreed. It’s always a good starting point though. I def agree about hitting up the Ed center though, they can tell you what’s offered and ways to avoid paying out of pocket.

    tig or mig?

i use a spoolgun and argon for mig and it's easier than people think. i repaired a pontoon boat for a buddy, it had a punched pontoon. when i told him i could do it with a mig rig he looked at me like i was retarded. afterwards it was like i just showed him magic was real

if you want info, hit me up. we can start a conversation about that

No worries - I used to crack down hard on those troops of mine who had the ability to do better but weren't.

One of those is a major today, and in line for his first command. I remember him as a smart-assed E5. My, how they grow up!

I'd like to get Tig setup on my wire feed. I got a little Lincoln. it does good for the stuff I need. Im pretty sure I got the one that I can make it TIG if I wanted, just have to switch it over.

Are you saying you repaired the aluminum pontoon with TIG?
