I think a lot of this nonsense could have been avoided if the OP simply updated some of his earlier posts. Most people arent going to read every post so they key on some fallacies and fire away before seeing the updates.

I think we all know and agree that pound for pound the Offroad is more capable offroad but the Sport is capable for offroading under the right circumstances.

Many people consider driving down a dirt road, "off-roading" while others consider it to be a trail that isnt actually a road.

FS and BLM drive down un-maintained fire access roads all the time with stock full-size trucks, a sport should be able to handle most of those types of roads.

Any vehicle with some ground clearance and 4wd and a committed driver is capable.

Experience and appropriate tires will trump all, as well as having low range 4WD, imo.

I've only had to engage my rear locker twice in the past year of ownership with my OR. During both situations, however, I would have been stuck without the locker and required another vehicle (or winch) to get out. That said, for the vast majority of us, it won't be needed. Same idea for crawl control, but it is a cool experience (if not a bit weird at first).

I have to say, though, that even though it's non-functional, the hood scoop looks killer.

All trim levels come down to being great Toyota trucks.

I guess I’m just dumb but I thought the point of this thread wasn’t to compare an OR with a Sport but simply to discuss the off-road ability of the sport. There are many ways to compare the 2 all have pluses and minuses but that’s not why I started reading this anyway.

Agreed. I'll take a driver that knows what he is doing over the most tricked out vechicle in the world.

i think “different” might be a better way of phrasing it. “Capable” is too dependent on use.

the sport will do any and more off-roading I will ever do (i would venture to say even without a 4x4), or 98% of people who buy a truck will ever do....then there are the rock crawlers

They're all capable until you try and climb a hill without a rear locker.

    None... yet.
Preach. The Tacoma is as popular as it is because it appeals to such a wide range of people for so many reasons. Sure, it has great offroading capabilities. But it also has pretty legendary reliability, it holds its value incredibly well, it can haul and tow a moderate amount, and it looks pretty sweet in all trims.

I dunno, I feel like this forum occasionally gets sucked into the vortex of the marketing image of the Tacoma. Folks start to feel like they have to defend owning a Taco if they're not overlanding or posting daily Instagrams from Moab. The Sport is a great truck, and way more capable than 99% of its drivers will ever need right off the showroom floor.

I mean, shit, for most of us, the majority of the reason we bought our trucks is the "really nice to have when I need it" factor. Like, do I need a locker? 99.9% of the time, no. But for that 0.1%, it's really good to have it. Do I really need 4WD? 98% of the time, no, but damn is it nice when I do. Do I even need a truck, period? Most of the time, no I don't, but I'd be fucked in those moments when I do need it if I didn't.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Buy what suits your lifestyle, makes you happy, and fits your budget. Whether that's a Sport, or an OR, or a Pro or an SR/SR5 (or a Jeep or an F-150 or a Prius or a bicycle or a Ridgeline or an Odyssey or whatever the hell else).

Does it help. Yeah, sure. But you don't "need" a rear locker to climb a hill. Well, maybe you do. I wouldn't know. I do know that I've climbed hills without it, & it's reallynot that difficult. Just like it's not that difficult not to turn the 4x4 dial when adjusting your A/C. But I get it. Some people have problems with things others don't.
