got to play first responder tonight

I was on my way to pick up some friends and was sitting at a light to get on the entrance ramp to the highway when I saw some lights come flying up the exit ramp on the right side of me. Vehicle was moving at a good 50-60 mph and swerved right before they got to the intersection, flipped in the ditch and smashed into a big metal light pole and ended up right side up with the oil pan resting on the pole column.

I hit my flashers and went through the red light and blocked the road at a diagonal, grabbed my first aid and gloves, got on the pass. side and saw hands dangling on the other side under the car, thought for sure he was dead. Got over there and found half of him was out of the window and had a huge laceration (down to skull). Reaked of alcohol. Got the wound wrapped the best I could. Had another bystander call 911 while I kept him stable. Long story short, the dude tried to fight me as half his scalp is missing and his car is on top of a light pole. police and ems got there within 5-6 minutes after the person placed the call. He had all kinds of crap from his car thrown all over the road.

I didn't bother to stick around after the fire crew got there. They had it under control.
What a f'ing night. People.... dont drive drunk! I am kinda pissed off about the whole thing because had he not swerved, he would have t-boned me at 60+ mph.

Thanks guys. Yeah, cop asked me and the people that were helping me if any of us had been drinking, all of us said no to which he responded ok because I could smell it 3 ft away from the driver. We all knew he had been drinking. Just the shear fact that the blood was just gushing out (not that it wouldn't have anyways) but you could tell it was really thin.

 

Don't know how many trauma calls you've been on, but head wounds always gush like a geyser. Blood thinner or no.

 

not too many that involved any head injuries. bloody nose b.s. crap and other misc. trauma runs. none as far as a dude's head sliced half open though.



btw. he wasn't wearing a seat belt and his window was up too. There was also a face print on the windshield too that I could see. dude got f'ed up. hopefully he learns a lesson.

 

Doubtful. They're pretty dumb.

It's just a shame they're really good at surviving their fuckups and killing everyone else.

True that. I'm always amazed how often drunk guys can slaughter entire families in horrendous accidents and yet so often walk away relatively unscathed themselves.

I owe my life to a person I never got to thank. Drunk driver t-boned me at an intersection. By-stander came to me while driver drove off. He was eventually caught but I am alive today because of people like you. So Thank you

wow! glad you are ok. i honestly think everyone should take a first responder class for situations like this.

 

Good job Aaron, sounds like you did all the right things......

1.Got involved
2.Took control
3.Cared for the DB who was too stupid/selfish to care for himself or more importantly others.
4.Allowed the on duty guys to do their jobs
5.Did it all while keeping your safety a priority.

 

thanks man. It is weird, when you respond to the scene after everything has happened, it doesn't seem like a big deal. this was the first time I witnessed something to this degree. Adrenaline kicked in and half an hour went by super super fast. I wont be surprised if he doesn't make it just because of the speed he was going, the face print in the windshield and smashing through the driver side window. Thats a whole hell of a lot of head trauma and his brain without a doubt got all kinds of screwed up.

 

If he was still responding appropriately to you considering his inebriation he'll be fine.
If not, serves the fucker right.


But honestly, I've seen too many where these assholes just more or less walk away. It's all about going limp I tell you. Tensing up causes so many injuries.

 

If there were more people like you, this world wouldn't be so bad.

 

yeah. Guess I will be looking for his name in the obituaries if he does die from the wounds. If not, I hope the bastard learned a lesson.
