Someone once told me that when buying a used vehicle that you consider reliable, it makes sense to trade mileage for features. What I mean is, if you think the 3rd gen Tacoma will do the high miles the previous generations did, then you might want to look at higher mileage OR with more features for the same price as the low mileage SR. Is a 40k mi OR really going to be less reliable than a 25k mi SR?
That being said, if you know you are going to be doing heavy mods like lockers and suspension and don’t care about the interior comforts then maybe it makes sense to buy the SR and build the truck you want out of it.
Either way, test drive, test drive and then test drive again!

I’d spring for the OR if you could, throw on some 265/75r16 Duratracs like you mention and you’ll have an extremely capable rig. And don’t listen to the naysayers, the 3rd Gen Tacoma is absolutely great.

And that’s why I went with the Pro model. I don’t have the time to f around in my garage like I used to. Let the stealership fix it if it breaks. No swapping suspension back etc for warranty work. Same reason my nicest Harley has nothing more than some slip-on exhaust and a extended warranty. A sensor went out over the summer and I dropped that bitch at the dealer and it was back running the next day for $25 Co-pay. Went and played on my other bike instead of wrenching all day. Lol

I'm sure 10 other peops have already said this but I would go for the OR just because of the manual... auto in these trucks is hot garbage. Sport and it are too similar and you might as well get the locker, better suspension, skids etc instead of a fake hood scoop.

If u get an auto, I'd go with the sr5 if you won't be hardcore offroading. All kinds of dude's selling stock OR suspension and other bits on CL for cheap anyways. If I were buying an auto I'd go with a 4runner or Ranger tho.... Or wait a bit more for a Bronco.

Only in Toyota land is a transmission that shifted strangely 3 years ago and had no common reliability issues “hot garbage”

He said he's buying a used one so it would deff apply to him. Ok, hot garbage is dramatic but it's clearly not up to par with most other offerings... Not even as good as the 2nd gen auto. It's just something that you have don't have to worry about with a manual if don't mind shifting.

The current programming for the Tacoma auto is absolutely on par with other offerings - if you think a transmission that hunts a little bit is uncommon in the age of chasing MPG you’re out of the loop.

Sure, but go drive a Ranger with the 10 speed auto or the old 4runner and then compare... Or a manual lol

I got sick of looking at used higher trim levels for the same price as a new SR. everyone replaces the shocks, tires, and a set of skids is easy to get. I like having less tech....as my old man used to say, it's just more stuff to break.

Everything metal besides the frame will be hiding rust behind it. 16 years old and possibly always in Massachusetts. Cool that it has a brand new frame though.

My auto transmission works fine no issues. Get the truck that tics the most boxes for you. If you want to wrench yourself a lot go SR wrench a little OR never wrench Pro. But always remember buy once cry once.

Ok as a public service for those that didn’t read the OP it appears that the main reason he has for buying a Tacoma is to get an automatic. Maybe we could move past trashing the auto trans and suggesting he get a MT and move on to something that might actually help the guy.
Or not, this is TW 3rd gen!

“I currently drive a 2004, Jeep TJ. Standard transmission. About a 3 inch lift with 33 inch tires. I love this thing but my wife can’t drive it and doesn’t seem interested in learning. Sooner or later it will just make sense to have something we both can drive. Plus, and this is a HUGE plus, I do 90 percent of my riding in stop and go city traffic and drivinga stick in that is getting old, real fast.”

I thought that i was the only person who actually read that part, so thanks... Come on TW, we need to improve our reading comprehension scores if we want to become an accredited university. We can do this!

I went from an 02 TJ to a 2nd gen to a 3rd gen and ive gotta say i love the 3rd gen. I have the limited model so it’s basically a fully loaded SR5. I have gone on some pretty gnarly trails with an AAL and spacer lift with 265s and no locker just fine. Just the added reliability from the truck vs my old TJ was worth every penny.
