08 Tacoma aftermarket stereo wiring

Swapping out my 6 disc changer for a Jvc Apple car play double din. My factory unit has 4 different wiring plug groups. I can identify 3 of the four. I know the steering wheel controller and the other two are for the speakers, power, illum, etc... does anyone know what the fourth plug is for. I don’t have a picture but could post one soon if it would help. Looking at the factory unit from the rear it would be on the left side

 

-Far left, looking from the rear, is steering wheel controls and aux input (for the trucks with the factory aux jack down below the radio)
-Next (smaller connector) is for the CD changer
-then the rear speakers
-lastly (right side, looking from the rear) is front speakers and power connections

 

Thank you so much! Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing an important input. Cd changer is no longer needed since I have Spotify. Do you happen to have a recommendation for an aftermarket steering wheel input?

@TacomaDad79 what did u go with ? I have an 08 and aftermarket pioneer but it doesn’t have carplay. Looking at going kinda low as feasibly possible but decent option. @destin_meeks I know bestbuy is running an install special if u buy the head unit from them. I have an older Pioneer AVIC -x850bt that I had them install back in Christmas of 2013. Would it be best to go with a similar pioneer upgrade headunit model for sake of wiring harness simplicity and such. ? I have the steering wheel control harness and Sirius xm antenna running currently. Trying to upgrade to carplay for a small as possible price . Would u recommend a certain head unit for me ? Figure I might as well keep things in the Best Buy family now !

 

The pioneer harness has changed since then but all other parts are still usable. If you’re already used to pioneer, I’d say stick with it

 

So any basic carplay unit will probably fit the bill? I was mainly going to have a powered sub installed behind my seats. And then I got to thinking hmmmm as long as I’m gonna have an install anyways maybe I take the opportunity and do an upgrade to the head unit also (without breaking the bank too hard). The truck is an 08 with 180K miles on her and I’ll likely be upgrading to a new 4 runner or taco in 2 years or so. Will most likely keep the 08 taco. How much extra do u think Best Buy would charge to install my powered sub that I bought elsewhere when they are installing the new head unit? I guess they will also have to route me a usb someplace since I don’t have the below the climate controls options or blanks as the newer 2nd gens do. From what u see in the inventory and such now what unit would be my best go to for car play feature (i like pioneer but am not married to it).

Sub install would run you $120, plus any potential wiring if it didn't come with that.
For the USB, hop over to Amazon and find a USB port that replaces one of those blanks you have. Make sure its a USB extension and NOT a charger with red and black power wires

that alpine you mentioned is a great unit! especially in the 2nd gens that dont have much space in the dash, and you can get the power pack that mounts to the back if you want to upgrade the rest of the speakers down the road

 

yeah that was my thinking since I took it out of the dash and couldn’t believe how little space was behind there. I actually have it partially hanging out now bc I can’t stuff it all back there lol. Here’s what I got usb extension wise. I actually ordered 2 from Amazon bc I didn’t know which would fit best. My beneath climate controls are only the 2 cigarette lighter adapter ones. No squares. I’m hoping one of them can be converted to a USB port.
