I used to work with this person. Most humble person I ever met. Wasn’t until years later I learned about her when I was sitting in one of those celebration months and her name was brought up.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelly_Mogk_Larson

    https://coastguardnews.com/first-female-coast-guard-rescue-swimmer-retires/2009/12/22/

    This blew my mind.

“ Ten years after becoming the first female Coast Guard rescue swimmer, Larson attended the Navy’s Flight Training Command in Pensacola, Fla., earning her second set of aviation wings and became a Coast Guard rescue helicopter pilot.”

Not only did she jump out of helo’s she went on to fly them...

I've been doing that for the past couple years as my way of saying fuck you to the Army. When turning a chiclet green is more important to the command than actually training to be good at our jobs I'm just going to do my 25 seconds of push-ups and walk away.

    Reserected from the dead.

    I know, massive thread derail.

Save yourself any headache and just use starting fluid, either if the old timers are reading. It's mostly Hexane now anyways.

It works exactly the same as Brake clean and has no Cl2 residue and it's a buck cheaper. Both are flammable so everything needs to be dry and the vapors must be gone before welding.

Your 1st gun is fine. You now have a spare.

I don't have a dog in this hunt, but have been enjoying lurking in this thread. I guess my post is as good as any to get notifications.

Thank you all for your service.

aw man, that doesn't sound good

i get it brother. i do.

reciprocating in that way isn't good for your headspace and timing man. it's not gonna do you any favors.

even if you already think it's not important, the fact that you let someone else interfere with your success in any way isn't strong.

maybe it's time to revisit that reason to do your best. i mean, I don't know you from Adam but I like to think you're a balanced, mature, reasonable, and thoughtful person.
I haven't seen any other indicators to the contrary, until this.

you might not need these words, but it sounds like you need to be reminded. please take them with the genuine human respect and consideration in which they are offered:

    fucking strap in Sir.

lowering expectations for yourself isn't a measured or thoughtful or reasonable or mature response. it's not adult and professional behavior.

some part of you wanted to be a badass when you agreed to the work. this isn't behavior indicative of a badass. this is something i would expect from someone that wore cheeto dust as part of their uniform. don't waste your time on the mis-steps and slights of others, especially a large and faceless bureaucracy that is barely aware of your existence.

to expect that your quiet tantrum will effect the army at-large or your command in-general is unrealistic and lazy.

it's my opinion that you should do some objective self-reflection and figure out why you decided to not do your best.
because you're not hurting anyone else but yourself with shit like that.

no, I take that back. you're hurting your unit.

you might be hurting some poor kid that sees you take a fucking knee with the clock running and then thinks "it's OK"

at worst, you'll be a bad anecdote for someone who was once a commander.

but if you try and actually do your best maybe you can inspire someone. maybe you can be that redeeming quality for someone in a shitty command.

maybe that kid watching you work your ass off for two whole minutes and two miles, maybe they'll try to rise to the occasion.

it's not for bragging rights, it's just being a decent human. being a good big
    brother, a strong example

as for your command: so they might suck.
so what? how does them sucking rationalize your behavior? your demonstrated attitude?

it's probably the first time they were a commander. at that rank, in that place, with those problems. they're being mentored or trained, or learning on-the-fly. maybe they're not being mentored or trained. maybe they're being mentored or trained poorly. try to empathize

but hear this and understand it: your commander is a member of your team.

    your team.

it might not be the best team right now, but it's still your team and it won't get any better if you don't help. and not helping is just not fucking helping.

your work is valuable and meaningful and important. I get this impression because you're doing that work. you asked. you rose and said "send me" and that, that's holy.

    brother, that is big medicine.

if it wasn't valuable or meaningful or important then you wouldn't be doing it. you'd be flying shitty two-seater helo tours over the Hoover Dam or selling used cars or something.

and if I'm wrong and your work isn't valuable or meaningful, maybe it's time to fly helicopter tours.

i say all that because you're wasting your time and effort on spite when you're supposed to be a member of a profession of arms. you should be too busy improving your position when you're not snapping spines over your knee.

i hope this message makes you a bit angry, then you calm down and think about it and get back to the business of being a professional badass.

My last PT test back in '05 I managed to fail with 252 points. Max pushups, max si-tups, failed the run. At that point my knees had just about had it. Top was impressed, first time he had evert had anyone fail with a score that high.

i just use acetone. it's super cheap. dries clean and fast. and I can control it easier from a wash dispenser than anything sprayed on parts, which means I waste less

Do you mind if I add this to my personal leadership library to share with others? I'll credit you as 'smartbomb' unless you'd rather I use your actual name.

    Well said, by the way.

Well said. It’s really a meaningless and childish act and I know that. Could I max my PT test no sweat like I did when I was still a young scout and NCO leading soldiers? Nope, knees are too old and broke for that speed on the run now but still max pushups/sit-ups. That said, being a professional badass in my current job has almost nothing to do with physical fitness and PT scores. I’d rather have a Soldier get a 200 on a PT test but be good at his real job than a guy smashing 300s who can’t do it. They aren’t mutually exclusive obviously but it’s not like being a scout when physical fitness was a literal key to success and a matter of life and death.

I agree with knowing your job first, it’s not all about a score. BUT I always valued effort more then performance. The guy that comes out and hits a 350 score with minimal effort? Meh. The kid I see running at night to just pass his run, I’ll take that guy every day. Lewis had a great 5m route, I used to come in early and offer anyone to run it with me before morning PT. Few guys did, the way I seen it, that was the time for a casual run just to put on miles. No reason to be a hard ass for that. Even when I had a company there was a big difference between a hard short run and a long slow run. Never understood taking the company out for 4 miles at a 7min pace when over half the company falls out. Looking for a gut check? Do the ol chain saw run. Come back with a few logs, now you have them for PT or the next slow gut check run. You can’t always beat guys down and expect them to improve. Learned that from a PSG I had as a team leader. All he wanted to do was break us off every day.

That said, I think it’s a better fuck you to the CoC when they see you kicking ass at PT and training for your job. Then just be open about how not ever being red in anything is unrealistic and a bad leadership trend. No reason why a subordinate can’t make you feel like shit. Best case scenario, you put them back on track of actually caring for soldiers (different from coddling). Worst case, nothing changes but you’re still the bigger man.

Just remember for soldiers and leaders, perception is reality. What you think you believe, you do. Soldiers think you don’t give a shit, you mid as well not give a shit. Leaders think you’re a rock star or shit bag, you are until you prove otherwise. Not always fair or true, but that’s how it is in most cases.

All those times I took an ass chewing and fought for my guys was offset by the ones that asked to come to my squad, platoon or company. I always figured most thought I was a pretty big asshole. Apparently not. Wife saved my sanity with my surprise retirement party she did. I got to the point where I felt I couldn’t fight any longer. Too hard on the soldiers, they think you’re an ass. Too easy on the stuff that really isn’t the priority, command thinks your crap. Finally just said screw it and felt guilty for leaving, but also felt like I had no positive influence anymore. Couldn’t make things better for the troops, hard training, discipline or even shielding them from dumb shit. Wife had a stack of letters from former soldiers and guys in other platoons or squads saying what that stuff meant to them. Some saying they always wanted to work for me. Sometimes you just don’t see what others do.

You can think fuck the CoC all day, even hold their feet to the fire (general authority), just don’t let them see you do it. I promise there is at least one private out there that will see it and remember that when he becomes a leader.

*I naturally say he/guys but that’s just what we use where I’m from when speaking of groups. Absolutely includes females.

A few additions to make me feel cool.
I heard nothing but horror stories on getting a VA home loan when I was in or talked to anyone who was in the military. When I got out I started a job as a military contractor just a few days after I EAS'ed. We had rented a house here where we settled from a family friend while I worked a little over 500 miles away. My wife and son were in the rented house for less than a week while I was away working. Had no money as I had not received my EAS / move compensation and my first check as a contractor would not come for another three weeks and I had used our savings to move and get settled in the new house. Probably the poorest I have ever been and my wife calls me crying because there was a foreclosure notice on the door. I assumed I would never get financed for a house having just started a new job with no money so I was pretty worried. There was one retired Coast Guard guy working with us and he had his shit together. He owned several houses, had nice vehicles and toys. I disclosed to him what was going on and he was like dude this is not a problem. You can use your VA loan and it will all be okay. Tell your wife to look for a house. I had bought into what a PITA that process was. He said no, it's easy and extremely simple. I think I filled out one paper stating I qualified for the loan, got a certified copy of my DD-214 and signed a POA so my wife could sign for me. It only took a couple of hours. We ended up finding a house 8 days later and closed in less than 20 days. Moved in and paid no payments for three months so I could get back on my feet.

I tell people all the time if you are not able to take advantage of the services you have earned it is because you have not tried. Our government actually does a hell of a job in that department if you are not an idiot.

I bought two houses with a VA loan and both were pretty painless. The second was a little more complicated because I still owned the first house (renting it out) and had to show proof of rental history before approval. It worked out fine but had a weird stipulation that the loan must be for $140,001 or more and the obvious one that I couldn’t exceed the VA loan cap with the combined loan values.
