Help, changed oil filter housing(aluminum) and now leaking

yes it did, i thought i ruined the housing actually.

 

Mine popped loose once I retightened it.

 

i have done that, bought from Amazon. one of these times it is going to crack and i want to be prepared.

 

For what it’s worth, I am running the aluminum version and it seems fine.

I let the dealer do the free oil changes then when it came time to do my own, I broke the tabs on the plastic housing trying to get it off. I was even using a (what I thought was) nice aluminum filter removal tool that many have posted about here.

end of the day, it didn’t fit the plastic housing quite that well but the aluminum one fits a little better. Who knows why

 

JUST DO IT!!! I replaced the plastic one with the aluminum one in both my taco and the wife's highlander. Zero leaks or any other issues. OP probably installed the O ring in the wrong groove.

 

Correct. I'm a little sheepish about my mistake. I did put the oring on the wrong groove! It can be easy to make the mistake because the end of the grooves have a large gap. Rookie mistake from someone who has done in depth mechanical work, little pissed about that but hopefully my post avoids someone making the same mistake.

When putting it on, the aluminum case is better designed in that, you can hand tighten it all the way because of larger wings on the housing making it easier to grip. I did not use a wrench because hand tightening was tight enough .
Finished 30 miles and not a drop of oil.
Scary lesson but in conclusion the aluminum was not the problem but an over zealous yours truly.

This is the housing and the wrench for $24 and it works great for me....zero leaks. On off very easy

 

Btw, I don't think this is an OEM housing.

 

it is made for it. It may not say Toyota on the box just like "aftermarket" oil but it is indeed made for the truck and fits like a glove.

 

Because it's cheaper, that's it! While Lexus can afford to splurge on more expensive/quality parts, Toyota is all about budget. There is no way that the plastic filter housing will outlast/outperform aluminum one. And no, they're not made out of space grade composite either.

 

Has anyone noticed when we stated using composite airplanes they stopped crashing as often?

Wow! Imagine the mess made when you pull a filter out of there with it full of oil!!! Like a ketchup bottle with out the lid on.
