I have a 1996 Xcab SR5 that had what I believe to be the OEM bug guard on it. I was wheeling this past weekend, and the spotter slipped, grabbed the guard, and SNAP.

Problem is, I can't find a source for a replacement. Dealer couldn't even find a part number when I called.

Anyone have any information on these??

No such thing as “oem”, it’s just a factory installed part. Odd the dealer couldn’t find a part though. They missed a perfect chance to over charge you for one.

Just go for a weather tech one, it’s a solid brand.

the OEM hood protector fits the old-style taco like some fine imported silk panties
my taco feels naked and exposed without it!

Same here if I don’t have my imported fine silk panties on, I can’t imagine how my truck feels without a hood protector.

Yeah the one on there fits too nice to look elsewhere. I'll pay the premium to replace with the same.

A hood deflector isn't a factory-installed part. It's likely a Genuine Accessory at best, but people use "OEM" in a lot of places where it's not really correct. Although, in this case I feel like maybe a case for "OEM" could be made if we consider the entire vehicle the original equipment and Toyota the manufacturer, and the company that made the deflector for Toyota a component supplier. Who knows.

00500-35952 is the part number for the hood deflector.

yes, i had dealer put one on for me, its accessory item just like a bedliner is .. or the front end mask was another option

    thanks,Jeff
that is best way to put it, its just like the bedliner accessory
$61 is not too bad, i recall the one i got to be quite a bit more than that

i don't think there was any difference in the hoods between 96 and 2000 models?

I have the OEM (or at least Toyota supplied) bug shield. Actually the second one, first lasted about 22 years and replaced it due to cracking a couple years ago. Fits like a glove.

Ordered it through McGeorge Toyota in Richmond Va a couple years ago. I'd like to get another just to have on hand in case ice/snow breaks my current one.

Haha, yeah. It would have either been DIO or PIO back then. Most likely usually dealer.

I've driven Tacomas cross country for years and I have never seen a need for a "bug protector." Where do you folks live and is this really a thing? I say this with total humility - I am just curious!
