I agree with Randy but I would also make sure the update on the leaf springs has been done if not they would be doing that also and most dealers are also replacing the lower control arms and brake lines. I wouldn't hesitate to ask for an extended warranty as well the worst they can say is no

How many have you owned? Do you speak for experience? I’ve owned four myself and never had any problems. Luck?

It makes absolutely no sense to put a frame under that truck. Toyota corporate is not going to pay for a frame on an ‘06. That truck is worth $13K on a good day, IF it’s a 4WD, TRD off road. The Toyota dealer is gonna spend about $15K for a frame, associated parts and a rental vehicle for several months while they’re waiting for the frame to get there. The dealer would be better off selling the truck to a wrecking yard. Hopefully they won’t send it to auction where some dealer will buy it and dump it on somebody else.

You want everything that's on the frame replacement campaign parts list, a free rental while your truck is undriveable as well.
Push for as much as you can get.

I say let them replace the frame. If you got a good deal on the truck and get a new frame you'll get other new components with it. Might end up making out w/ a better deal than you ever thought. Plus, you still get the truck you wanted.

It's a used vehicle that's not going to be warrantied and if the mechanic did an inspection and its mechanically sound, I say let the dealer replace the frame at their expense and just do future maintenance and repairs with the local mechanic. There's no reason to bring a used vehicle back to a dealership for any repairs unless there are TSB recalls. I would take this Tacoma with a new frame vs finding another used Tacoma and dealing with average frame rust.

Thanks, everyone, so much for all the great advice. My mind is spinning with the possibilities. Maybe some additional details will help clarify the best course of action: I paid 13K at a Toyota Dealership for 2006, Access cab, black, 81K miles with a Leer 550 series (I think) Tonneau cover. The dealership manager said that they would ship the car to the manufacturer to replace the frame and would allow me to have it reinspected before making a final decision. I live in Manhattan, don't own a car, and use public transportation exclusively. I don't have the time or the means to travel hither and yon to find the perfect deal in Western NJ, Long Island, or wherever else. Part of me thinks the new frame solution is a good one, for all the reasons some of you mention above. Of course, the other part me is saying take the money and run, fast, but then I'm starting from scratch, again, with all the same concerns. Ugh.

The tale of them "shipping the truck to the manufacturer" is a lie. Not going to happen.

That is not the way it works. Do not trust them, they are liars.

    Lol what’s with the hesitation.

The dealer KNOWINGLY sold you an extremely dangerous vehicle.

take the cash and find a reputable dealer that you can buy from.

Everything about them so far has been shady. They did an inadequate inspection that failed to catch major problems with the frame and the brake lines, and that's just what we can see from one photo. Then they told you that it's '96/100' for condition, which was a lie. They told you that it was never in an accident, which according to your mechanic was another lie. Then when you did your due diligence, they said that they'd 'ship the car to the manufacturer' which is absolutely false.

Stop dealing with these people. Walk away from this with your money back and a lesson learned. I know it's going to be a hassle for you, but it's going to be a whole lot more frustration dealing with them on this then just cutting your losses.

While having a new frame under an otherwise (assumably) sound vehicle sounds like an awesome value, I wouldn’t take their claim at face value. I’d be concerned about them taking it and claiming that they’re working on getting it replaced, when instead they just pigeon hole it. I’d go to the Toyota dealership, who will likely do the work and talk to the service management about what is involved, how long it would take to actually get parts in to have the frame swapped, what parts would likely need to be ordered in addition based on condition and what a realistic timeline would look like without the dealership you bought it from. Then go to the dealership you bought it from and figure out what their version of the story is going to be. If they don’t give you a definitive timeline, don’t offer a rental for the entire time the vehicle is out of service and won’t sign a contract for the work to be completed I’d step away. I’d definitely have a lawyer involved. Or you can run away, because that sounds like a lot less work and a lot less headache.
