Hello Tacoma World I am at a cross road with my 2010, about a month ago after driving about an hour and a half I shut my truck off to unload it. Went to restart it and just rolled over but no start. Truck sat for about an hour and it restarted like nothing happened, drove almost all the way home and it died at a traffic light. Sat for a while when we were waiting for AAA and it restarted. Took it to a local shop they shopped AllData and came up with the idea to change the fuel pump resistor. $300 dollars later the problem persists. Had the truck at a Toyota dealer and they let it idle for 2 hours and said they couldn’t find anything wrong. Oh and they charged me $115 dollars for that. I am going to check all my grounds tomorrow but I wonder if any of you guys or girls out there have experienced anything like this. I am going to have to trade my truck in if I can’t make it reliable again. Thank you for reading and any ideas are much appreciated!

a little side note on recent work:

    New frame November 2018
New upper control arms November 2019
    New battery December 2019

Sorry to hear of your problem.
Make sure the battery is good.
Then do a fuel pressure test. Been more than one with sock around fuel pump clogged. There is no external fuel filter to check otherwise.

    Please update as needed.

How up to date is the mundane maintenance? e.g., Throttle body clean, MAF, spark plugs, air filter, Etc.

Plugs and air filter are current, not the MAF or throttle body...

    1) clean MAF sensor/TB
    2) check and install new plugs if needed
    3) check fuel pressure

I am having a similar intermittent stalling problem as described in this string ( 2004 Tacoma V6 TRD 140k miles ) . The vehicle is with a Toyota dealer and they can not find a problem. Where you able to solve your stalling issue ?

Sorry to hear about your troubles.....
Wondering if any codes came up when you scanned the truck?

The engine check light did not come on and the dealer said "no codes". Thanks for your quick response.

I would think about changing the fuel pump. I could be intermittent. When things are not clear I use the
    KISS principle.

Same thing no engine codes just over 90k on my truck. The dealer had no answers so I am back to square one. It has been suggested checking fuel pressure so whe I get that done I’ll get back to you guys!

Are you going to do it or have it done. There is a special Toyota adapter IIRC needed along with regular fuel pressure gauge. Make sure you have the specs. for the 4.0 to take along. Ifyou do not have them holler.

No I’ll have it done somewhere, I am also redoing the vehicle grounds after a buddy suggested it. Will finish that up on Saturday. Thank you!

Have you tried swapping the fuel pump relay with another matching one in the fuse box?

No I didn’t as of yet, I tested it after the first failure and it was ok. The dealer i had it at for two weeks checked it too and said it was ok. I still may get a new one and try it though!

First of all thanks to all you folks who gave me some ideas on what to do with my truck, I have cleaned the mass flow air sensor, throttle body, and cleaned up all the grounds I could find. I took it for a ride today and at exactly 1.25 hours it died.:( I am super bummed and don’t know what else to do, I did however notice something that I didn’t see before, when it died the temp gauge was not working when the key was rolled foreword. The fuel gauge came up to the current level and everything else was ok. The truck sat for about 30 minutes and started back up just fine, the temp gauge worked again was a bit low because the truck was off for a bit, was cold out. Not sure what to do at this point hope this makes sense kind of hard to explain. Thanks for reading

I have to agree with a few other’s who suggested you check fuel pressure.

The thing with the temperature sensor is odd. A couple things that could cause it is an air pocket in the cooling system. Or you could have a severe case of coolant electrolysis. If you have a multimeter, google search testing for electrolysis in coolant.

Update on my truck, during the many times the current shop had my truck stall he discovered that when it stalls the scan tool plugged into the OBD port wont read and says communication failed. Once again when the truck cools for about half an hour and starts again then the scan tool works again, he believes that the computer is faulty. He’s getting me prices on OE from Toyota as he hasn’t had good experience with after market units. Thoughts on what his assessment is? If I can’t get this solved I will have no choice but to trade it in start a new job in a few weeks and need to to commute to my job. Thanks again for all the input!

Prepare yourself for sticker shock. An ecm can be costly. You might consider a used one, if you can get some kind of warranty on it. It’s extremely tedious but you could check each wire going to the ecm for a pushed back pin. Even more tedious would be to test each individual wire to see that there’s no shorts, and it connects to what it’s supposed to.

The diagnosis sounds right. I had one that had gone out, it wouldn’t start or scan at all.
