is it like the metal screen? Thought about doing it maybe 6 years ago on my Harley. Seemed to let oil pass through quicker but didn’t seem like it didn’t “filter” As well.

It's true, even Toyota utilized cartridges back then.... here's a nos filter. It's spec'd for early/mid 60's Toyota Stout with 4 cylinder R engine (2R or 12R) Interestingly, it's almost the exact dimensions of the filter Toyota uses for their current UR Series V8 engines that are installed in the Tundra, Land Cruiser, and various Lexus vehicles.

Because the 3.5L is a race engine, you don’t want an oil filter exploding off while at the strip

Cartridge filters are comparatively new, in fact oil filters weren't common until the 30s.... a common mod on ag equipment until the late 40s was an add-on filter housing which was conveniently sized to use a toilet roll as a filter element. Personally, I don't see the issue; there might be slightly less mess with a "traditional" spin-on filter, but there's also a lot less waste, and having gone from a spin-on on my Ranger to the cartridge of my Tacoma, I would say it adds exactly zero seconds to my oil change procedure.

The big plus for cartridges is that they're MUCH easier to dissect if you want to do a forensic analysis.

Another big plus imo is its a cleaner job if you have the right tools. The ability to drain the cartridge housing before removing it is awesome imo

What I don't understand is how a cartridge filter is somehow significantly more expensive than a painted steel spin-on filter with the cartridge inside of it.

i dont understand saving an oil can from ending up in the land fill.
average person changes the filter once a year. one can a year from me
to the land fill. now compare that to the number of beer and soda cans
that end up there per person, far more than the one oil can i used to donate. i know
that every bit helps, but dammit put that oil filter back on top of that engine
    where its supposed to be.

GM and Ford stopped using the cartridge filters for spin-ons in the mid-late 60s.

I don't see any issue with changing the cartage on my '18 TRD Sport, not that difficult. My '96 Tacoma has a spin-on.

I really don't understand how a cartridge filter is kicking everyone's ass.

It's less waste. It's cheap. It's not hard to change.

Bingo. If you can’t deal with a cartridge, you have zero reason to be working on your own vehicle.

This was my fault. That said...7E076ED7-86D1-40EA-8B74-FD5599078D46.jpg

I was changing my filter and the wrench got stuck to the plastic housing. I grabbed the wrench with my left hand and the housing with the right and it didn’t end well. Had to wait for my wife to get home from shopping to get to the minor emergency for stitches because my taco had no oil and I had a nasty oil contaminated laceration. That never happened with a spin on filter.

If this is anything like the 4runner my wive has, i gave up on removing the drain plug first. Never seems to break lose. Just unscrew the whole housing, replece and reattach. Then you dont have to hold anything.

I didn’t have any trouble with the drain plug and that is a feature I do like over a spin on filter.

Circled in red is the metal that cut me. My hand was over the top gripping and twisting.

Mine got stuck too. I didn't bother with getting it unstuck, just cleaned the housing, installed the new filter/o-ring all with the filter socket still stuck on the housing.
