Need help hardwiring power inverter

Not too long ago I picked up the bestek 300w "pure sine" power inverter from Amazon. I know it's not the best option, but it fits my budget and needs. I am going to put it in my truck camper and need advice on how to wire it. It came wired with a 12v plug. I was just wondering if I should cut it off and wire it directly to the battery or use something like this.

If I wire it directly to the battery, what guage wire should I use? Any help is appreciated, I'm new to the world of wiring!

 

300 watts is not that much. A hair dryer can be 1200-1600 watts. Regardless, gauge of wire is determined by length of run and current draw. What does the inverter recommend? Also install a breaker or fuse in front of the inverter.

 

Yeah I mainly just plan on using it for charging phones and my laptop so it should be plenty for my needs. I was thinking because it's only 300 watts I should be able to just use the adapter I linked right? But there is no information that came with the inverter on wiring it because it just came with the 12v plug attached to it. Heres a link to what I got.

How far from the battery do you plan to mount it?

400 watts, 10 feet, #14 gauge you should be good. That gives you extra capacity to expand.

 

I looked at that on Amazon. I’d suggest you use it as is from a power port. It will not likely give you the full wattage it states in the marketing literature but to charge a laptop it’ll probably work. Try it for 1/2 hour and see if it starts on fire. I’d not permanently mount it. If you later decide you need more power you’re likely upgrading to a much more robust inverter with heat syncs designed to be permanently mounted, just plug and play after your test.

 

What are the power ports in your truck rated for? If you pull a full 300 watts through them I bet you'll blow a fuse.

Hey, so I have a 500W Bestek inverter that I use for charging the kids stuff. I too was thinking of hardwiring it in as well. It's internally fused and I was going to run 6 ga wire from the battery through the firewall and under the seat to hard mount it.

Did you ever mount yours as you wanted in your vehicle? I'd like to hard mount it under the seat so it doesn't get cluttered with wire and get kicked around by the kids in the back seat...

I'd also like to be able to get the full 500 watts wiring this way...

edit: Maybe 6 ga is way to thick? But it says on the inverter that the input is DC 11-15v 49A. 49A at 15 ft on the charts says 6 ga? I dunno...

 

6 ga sounds about right. You'll want a fuse at the battery end too, just in case you get a short between the wire and the inverter.

I'm a big fan of welding wire for this kind of stuff.
