so i tried that opening in layers and masking it.......i couldnt do it lol.. i guess it just works for certain photos?

Basically, you're using the mask to reveal what's below. Give me the steps you used and maybe post tiny versions of the images you used?

I di that, but it wasn't something that had a defined foreground and background......it was my truck lol

 

Doesn't matter but you do want two different exposures.

Let's say you're shooting in your driveway. At night cause that's how you roll. One side will be in shadow and one lit. So make one exposure for the light side (properly exposed) and then another for the dark--expose it a little longer. Now take then into PS. Be easier if the "dark" one was the bottom layer. Now mask away and do your thing.

its because i have that light pointing directly at the camera....the other ones arent
