Yea thats the question. 5100s are in the near future for me at 2.5 and I have heard alot of debate about the diff drop. Is it better to have it and not worry about vibes, or is their a chance of problems when unbolting the diff and not re-aligning it correctly?

Purpose of diff drop isn't really to solve vibrations - you're more concerned with correcting the increased angle on the cv boots and cv joint within the front diff.

This is a long term wear durability issue.

That being said, I haven't decided if I want to go with a diff drop or not. Once it's on, you're changing the angle of the front driveshaft, and that's just one more change in the total system dynamic.

I did the diff drop when I did my 5100s but I don't really know if it helped or not. I do have some slight vibrations (although I haven't had my alignment done yet because I have only installed my drivers side wheel spacers, haven't gotten the passenger side ones yet) so hopefully the very slight vibrations will be fixed when I get the alignment done, but if it doesn't I might try taking off the diff spacer to see if it changes anything. If anyone has any comments on that I am open for suggestion. Thanks.

One thing that people fail to remember is that the differential drop on the 05+ Tacomas messes with your ground clearance. The stock mount is big, flat, wide, and distributes loads across that front cross member.

A differential drop pushes that mount down using a cylinder between the mount and the cross member. You're now more prone to catching the mount on something, and if/when you do, you have less surface area supporting it on the top side.

The end result on my truck is a mangled cross member and a cracked oil pan, even with the skidplate modified to work with the diff drop. I thought that thing was a stupid idea when I first installed it and am only more convinced of that now.

When I get around to pulling the skids I'll take details pictures of just how mangled everything is. The differential drop punched right through to the top of the cross member.

I've heard it isn't as helpful with the 2nd gens compared to 1st gen. I have an OME 3" lift w/o diff drop. I would recommend new UCA's with the lift, that will help alignment more. The angles with a 2.5-3" aren't too bad.

5100s at 2.5, no vibes worth mentioning, alignment within specs, and CVs are fine.

nothing, all stock expect got a OE replacement air filter K&N.
i just had the diff. drop installed to help fix my cv angle because my driver side cv axle was not level with the passenger side. so after i had it installed it cured the angles. so answer to your question does it help the vibes? no, it didn't cure the vibe. your best option is to get the carrier bearer drop from beef taco and have your wheels balance. but my truck is a 1st gen.

A lot of people will so it's not worth it but i'll disagree with them all day.
I put mine on it about 5 minutes or less and it makes a very noticable difference on the cv angles

I've driven for the past 3 months & 9k mi on my OME lift with 881s w/o a diff drop. No vibes to speak of and my cv boots could be better but are at an acceptable angle for me. IMO diff drops don't do enough to be worth the effort.
Carrier bearing drop would be a good idea though. I plan on that in the not too distant future.

I would much rather have to replace another set of CV boots, but because of the drop kit I instead have to cut out and replace the frame cross-member and my oil pan.

It'll work fine on a street truck or something that just sees dirt roads. If you wheel, it's a terrible idea and causes FAR more problems than it solves.

Side note -- those speaker rings are great!

I don't have one. Haven't had any problems. Would probably stay away from installing one too.
