What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Its holding up alright. Lol. I hate electrical stuff

 

My kids runner gave birth to a Steering rack...



We did up the replacement rack with Energy Suspension bushings. And will be installing today.



Also pulled the LCAs and installed Whiteline Bushings while we were in there.

 

Did you use the factory wiring? was there any additional modifications required?

Pretty sure my rear main seal just went. Kinda hard to see in the pic but it’s leaking from the transmission and it doesn’t smell like diff fluid.

 

If it's ATF wouldn't it be a trans leak and not the rear main? I thought the rear main leaked engine oil when it goes.

 

If you're sure it's the rear main (and not coming from the rear portion of your valve covers, then running down) the rear main really isn't as bad as people make it out to be.

***edit*** That looks like oil to me, it's not red is it. If oil is coming from between trans and engine it is definate rear main... if those drips are red, I'd say your input shaft seal on your trans.

 

Its 5-speed so no ATF. That’s what I was saying it doesn’t have an odd odor so I know it was diff fluid so it’s not a transmission leak.

Nope it’s oil colored haha. My valve covers leak but not this bad, but with just a quick look I think it’s rear main. Will look more into it but I’ve got a business trip this coming week.....

 

Ah gotcha. Looks pink/red in the photo so I thought maybe trans or power steering leak. But if it's engine oil then yeah

 

Yeah the pic isn’t very good, but it’s definitely oil so off the find some write ups and order parts

 

Rear main, is a pain in the ass, but I wouldn't say it's difficult. Time consuming, yes... and you HAVE TO HAVE a trans jack.

 

That’s what I’ve heard, I’m gonna do the clutch too since I’m in that far. My buddy has a cheap harbor freight one so I’ll use that when the time comes

 

Harbor Freight trans jack is what I used for my 4x swap (and did the rear main) wirked fine.

 

How many miles on it? I changed my rear main seal recently when we had the engine out. It was just starting to leak. Some oil seepage and lots of debris (dirt/mud/crud) attached to it. I am at 195K.

 

BINFORD sprung for a bit more R&D to revive an old project.

So I picked up some SAE grade 8 hardware, 3" X 9/16" fine thread, to be cut down a bit.


And at this thing was just in the way.

 

187k plus I recently dunked the front end so I’m sure that aided to it

 

Yup. Running thru water with a high grit content will definitely get to your seals. Not just the rear main, but also the t-case output seals and the front diff axle seals.

 

Yeah my diff seal went already so I’ll monitor everything else

 

Changed the oil in the 02, fun times

 

Had a little fun with the carrier bearing and transmission mount this morning! Guess after 275K they should be done....scraped about 20lb of crud and dirt off the skid plate....time to clean the garage now...
