with a helper I found it easy to leave the cv’s attached to the spindles and just remove sway bar links lower ball joint bolts and seperate the tie rod ends. Was able to get it out of the way enough and rest them on a jack stand on one of the lower ball joint bolts screwed back in and plenty of room to remove the cv’s since I couldn’t get the little nut cover off without damaging it and my wheels don’t run a center cap so they’re pretty visible.

What ended up popping the cv’s free was a large flat head and hammer while my dad applied pressure with a pry bar. We had a little bit of a fight. Slide hammer wouldn’t do it nor the hammer method without the pry bar.
Instead of removing the plug bracket we left it in place and just removed all wiring. We also removed the little bracket that’s held on by a 12mm Allen accessed from underneath and this gave us more room. Some instructions left this in place.

all in all it wasn’t too bad at all, took us about an hour and a half. We’ll see how hard going back together is.

I used these vids for some info and found them useful.

    part 2
    https://youtu.be/Qrn1lui91-I

On aside note the play in The driver side cv shaft is just plain stupid. Toyota should be ashamed of such a crappy design in my opinion. Hoping my front locker will take care of that issue on my new front diff.

hi. Trying to place my order for the 5.29 complete assembled pre-built core and don't want to go through 100 pages in this thread to find out the answer. Someone kindly reply.
Here are the list of options in the link : https://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-23993418-2016-tacoma-auto-non-elocker-third.html
    Questions.
    1. Do I need to add the solid spacer option? I don't know it's merits. What do you recommend?.
    2. Do I need to add gear oil? We have diff oil.
    3. Where do I specify that I am not a 4x4. I don't want the front diff. I'm only replacing my rear diff as my truck is not a 4x4.
    4. Should i select 'No core' option + shipping label if I want to buy ECGs diff and return my stock gear/diff core?
I'm a mall truck. I have no plans to off-road. Never have. I have 33s on all four corners. Mine's a TRD sport automatic with no front diff. Re-gearing for better driving experience. Thanks!

    1. No
    2. No
    3. Not sure, looks like you order the front and rear seperate.
    4. I think you have to select core otherwise you buy the 3rd outright but I’m not sure. Normally when you buy a part you pay the core charge and when you return the old one they reimburse the core charge but not sure how ECGS does this.

    1. no clue
    2. your choice
    3. this is for the rear only so it doesnt matter if you 4x2 or 4x4, diffs are the same.
    4. Add core charge and label. Quote from the description on page you linked: "If you are waiting until you receive new diff, to send your unit in, please select add core charge from the core charge drop down Tab. After 4 weeks the core will be considered purchased by you."
