What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Yeah the pic isn’t very good, but it’s definitely oil so off the find some write ups and order parts

 

Rear main, is a pain in the ass, but I wouldn't say it's difficult. Time consuming, yes... and you HAVE TO HAVE a trans jack.

 

That’s what I’ve heard, I’m gonna do the clutch too since I’m in that far. My buddy has a cheap harbor freight one so I’ll use that when the time comes

 

Harbor Freight trans jack is what I used for my 4x swap (and did the rear main) wirked fine.

 

How many miles on it? I changed my rear main seal recently when we had the engine out. It was just starting to leak. Some oil seepage and lots of debris (dirt/mud/crud) attached to it. I am at 195K.

 

BINFORD sprung for a bit more R&D to revive an old project.

So I picked up some SAE grade 8 hardware, 3" X 9/16" fine thread, to be cut down a bit.


And at this thing was just in the way.

 

187k plus I recently dunked the front end so I’m sure that aided to it

 

Yup. Running thru water with a high grit content will definitely get to your seals. Not just the rear main, but also the t-case output seals and the front diff axle seals.

 

Yeah my diff seal went already so I’ll monitor everything else

 

Changed the oil in the 02, fun times

 

Had a little fun with the carrier bearing and transmission mount this morning! Guess after 275K they should be done....scraped about 20lb of crud and dirt off the skid plate....time to clean the garage now...

 

Just ordered me one of these carbon spoilers and also a little carbon wrap to do the chrome on my door handles and I have a roll big enough to do a hood or roof wrap with.

 

Finally Have gotten close to finishing this rear tire carrier . Need a paint job and to get the jack studs threaded but what you all think

You don't HAVE to have a transmission jack. Makes it easier, but I've done it without one two different times. Wasn't really that bad. Just used a big floor jack.

Rear main leaking will pretty much always get oil on the clutch and ruin it, so replacing it really isn't an option, it's a must. If it isn't slipping now, it will soon if you keep driving it. Even if it's not slipping, it will almost certainly have enough oil on it that you would need to chainge it.

 

Surprisingly the best trans jack I’ve used on the ground... was an atv jack. Lol

 

Ok... If you have the patients and temperment I do you HAVE TO HAVE a transmission jack.

Unless you like making up cuss words and throwing tools across your garage.

Because lining up for the bolts is a mutherfucker.

Although I was speaking about an auto trans. I'm sure manual is a bit easier.

 

Rotated my tires and chopped my exhaust just before the leaf spring.
Hopefully it doesn't hurt the spare tire being that close.

 

Replacement rack installed.
