Not too unusual. One of the vehicles I learned to drive a stick on was my dad's 3/4 Ton Chev PU with good old SB 350. Unknown the diff on that, but 1st was granny gear. Super low. All starts were in 2nd. So for normal driving it was just a 3 speed MT.

3rd gen tacos? NO. BUT For sure if you have 5.29 gears swapped in, and LO REAR only mod harness, yes starting in 2nd is easy because I can do it with 4.88 gears. Otherwise, stock normal, 1st is definitely NOT low enough, YOU will smog your clutch and YOU will get the release of devil stink and accompanying shortened clutch life.

This was back in the late 80's, and another benefit was they gave you a discount for renting one of the older trucks.

I remember that U-haul being a late 60s Ford with a 390, I also remember it having a weird mechanical rev limiter. When you revved the engine too far the throttle pedal pushed your foot back up, I tried to overcome it a few times but it easily shoved my foot back.

My buddys 1990 ferd F1fity with 4.9 inline 6 was like that. Was 4spd, but really 3 spd for normal driving. We did brakestands in 2nd in his driveway quite a few times, oh the fun we had.

That was a great engine, just very thirsty. The ferd was indestructible too.

Yeah that rev limiter was quite bizarre, I don't remember how it did on gas but am guessing it sucked, lol.

I used to help people move just to get a chance to drive a U-Haul truck with manual transmission (and manual steering). Transmissions had no syncros; double clutching all shifts up and down. Great fun to drive! Gas mileage was about 4 to 6.

    That is excellent.

Since this is my first pick up, I get excited when folks ask to haul something.

Hah, I was the designated Uhaul driver for a lot of my friends back in the day, nobody else wanted to drive those old things, I loved it.

We've had a trailer for many years. Always fun to help folks with it. We don't keep it registered though. Just swap a m/c plate on to it.

I do enjoy shoveling from it.

It's a weird feeling. One, because it doesn't feel like mine yet. Feels like I'm driving a rental due to the low miles.

The other is that it feels nothing like the manuals I've driven, with the exception of my Jeep. Feels like I'm driving a box truck in first gear.

Is the accumulator why it doesn't roll back on a hill for a second?

I don't want to ask stupid questions here, but this purchase was a bit sudden and unexpected. I had been searching for a 2G Spruce Mica forever, and started to look at 3Gs when I fell in love with this color, found this one 200 miles away, and the wife is like "let's go." Surprised the shit out of me. I'm still doing my research and figuring it out.

That is Hill Assist on MT Sports (and maybe SRs?) only. It cannot be disabled. Some like it, some hate it, and some are indifferent. I'm indifferent and feel it saves a bit of clutch wear.

    This is the ADM:

Also, poke your head into the 2LM:
