    Hey all,

I found someone who's willing to selling me their SnugTop Cab-Hi Topper for $1,500. It doesn't have too many bells and whistles, mostly the standard features. It does have rail tracks and it's coming with a roof rack on top. Looks like it's in good condition too.

Do this seem like a good deal to y'all? I've been searching for months for a matching color, so I'm kinda desperate. I think I'm going to go for but what curious to see what people thought.

    Thanks!

Seems like a very reasonable price. I paid quite a bit more than that for my new one.

Make sure the seals to the bed are in good shape - easy to replace if necessary.

Extra keys can be had from a dealer.

If you get it, post pictures!

I definitely will! I'm not posting any pictures that they sent me out of fear someone will somehow try to find this person and steal the topper from me haha. I've had such bad luck beating people to purchasing a used topper off of CL!

Have you priced a new one for reference? Sounds like they're trying to get nearly as much as they paid. How old is it? Do warranties transfer? Pictures? What features does it have if any? Shells don't hold their value too well from what I can see but it can be a different story if you have very specific needs/wants. For that price it better be in perfect condition.

From what I’ve seen for toppers, that’s about the going rate, maybe even a little on the high side. However it’s kind of like a trunk lid for a ‘62 Rambler American. The guys had it for years with no interest. You’ve been looking for one for years with no success. When you find it are you really going to snivel and look for a better deal?

Negotiate the best deal you can, put it on your truck and enjoy the looks and functionality.

From my experience, the cheapest new topper from a low-budget company (say ATC) with absolutely no features runs at about $1200-$1300. I've contacted my local topper dealer for a quote on this brand of SnugTop with a rack on top.

It's not carpeted (but honestly, I don't care too much about that and could do it myself if needed), has sliding side doors with a mesh screens. The rear has a single t-lock and props open. Has rail tracks and a rack included (retail value I'd say betwee $300-$500 new).

It's just so hard to come across used toppers with a matching color. Like really, really hard. I recently found one on CL that had been posted for about 4 hours, by the time I replied someone had already gone and picked it up:(

The rack is probably the "big one" in this deal. So make sure you really need it. When I got my Hi Liner Sport the rack would have added, like you said, 300-500. I opted not to do it since I was already at ~$2500 with a bunch of options that I wanted since I was making a "living space" back there. Decided I would go back for the rack if I ever established a need and 4 years later still haven't. Make sure the rack it is legit and not some BS that the seller added after the fact.

If it turns out to be a deal that makes you happy then jump on it. Of course try and see how flexible he is on that price, cash in hand goes a long way.

He's right usually factory ordered racks are reinforced on the roof to hold the extra weight.

10 years ago I ordered an ARE Z series with tilt down front window, carpet, and screened opening vent windows and it was ~$2000. They are not cheap as they are nice, and custom built to order. Don't expect them to be priced like a crappy aluminum generic white shell from 40 years ago. $1500 does sound a little high, but it's not like you'll get a new one for under $2k, so you are still saving $$$

Okay y'all, things are shifting. My local dealer just called me and said they have a used A.R.E. MX Series in my Tacomas color for $1,500. No racks on top but it's carpet lined, front sliding window and side sliding windows.

I'm torn about the cosmetic aspect of the MX-series vs. Cab-Hi, but I also do a lot of outdoors stuff so the ability to store extra stuff sounds nice. Help me!!

I got the extra 4" height because I sleep back there on a platform. Makes a huge difference for sitting up and general moving about. I'm not sure how much that extra height would help if I was just using the back for transporting stuff. I mean if you're really going to be hauling a lot of tall stuff you wouldn't be considering a shell anyway.

Something you haven't mentioned is Windoors. You're spending a lot of money so you're gonna want to be happy. They're worth whatever they're asking for them. Easily the best shell feature available.

    More than I can afford
In an ironic twist of fate, I have a dashboard for a 62 Rambler American. Junkyard pull I was going to make shop art out of.

As for the shell, it is a good price for a color matching one. My Snugtop was ~$2,800 new (cab hi, windoors, racks, power lock, headliner and flip down front glass). As someone who owns or has owned shells from Snugtop, Leer, ARE and a random no name one, I can say the Snugtops are the best ones on the market.

This. I have an ARE Z (cab height) which I love. I sleep in the back of mine 3+ weeks a year and if I could do it again I would get the raised height model. And I will on my next truck. I would love to have even a 4" high platform to store stuff under. I don't want to add a platform with the current shell because I want to be able to sit up.

The fold down front window is a must have IMO- you want to be able to clean both it and the cab's back window without removing the shell.

Also allows you to access the cab without leaving both slider windows open all night. Crack the cab side slider, put some essentials in the back seat, and if you REALLY need to get at them you can fold down the front window to open the shell-side slider then slide the cab side window fully open and reach most of the back seat (my shell front slider doesn't allow opening from inside the shell). Because nobody wants to get up and put their shoes on and walk around the side of the truck to get things.
