Yakima roof rack ?

my wife got me 58” round bar and yakima naked roof rack

can’t find a lot of info on 3rd gens with this set up.

anybody got it? advice before installing ? would love to see some photos if anyone has this set up or similar

I have the Yakima aero bars with the baseline towers. I have a ski box mounted on the bars all winter and paddle boards in the summer. The towers use rubber feet and 'baseclips' to secure to the roof and top of the door jambs. I have not experienced any leaking where the clip and door weatherstripping meet. Sorry I don't have any close up photos of the towers.

I always wonder how the paint will hold up to those.

 

Yakima makes a tower that will bolt into the factory holes for the rack.

 

I’ve seen this photo and announcement from Yakima but unable to find it on their website. They also have this photo.

But all fit guides for the 3rd Gen point to the old style clamp type mounting pads that hook into the door keeping.

 

Speaking from experince if your going to run these you'll want to protect your paint with 3M protectant or something similar. The rubber feet will rub the paint and the metal clips will actually chip the paint off where it contacts the edge of the roof.

 

I can't upload any pics (I'm at work) but I have the same rack setup as the first person who responded. So far I have used the rack only to mount the cargo basket, which I have used when camping a few times. My goal is to get a kayak at some point and purchase the kayak carrier cradle that mounts to the bars.

The versatility is nice, and you can take the rack off when you want to versus going with one of the more permanent setups. You can also do most everything with the Yakima basket that you would do with a Prinsu rack, like mounting a shovel, spare tire, lighting, etc.

The one thing I noticed is it can be a bitch to get the towers in the right spot the first couple times you go to put the rack on. I struggled with it even after measuring everything closely. I guess if you crimp one side down too much it will pull the other just a tad too far in, so you have to make sure you do it evenly, lesson learned for me.

 

Well I contacted Yakima, because I want this setup myself and it’s a custom setup consisting is the Skyline Towers and landing pad 21.

As @Extra Hard Taco said, it is best to put on some sort of protectant is smart. I plan on wrapping my roof soon, so I can put a rack on top.

Looks like it has the same picture in the gallery for the product...but holy crap that thing starts at 1k! From what I've seen for roof racks it definitely seems on the higher side.

It seems like the landing pad 21 from the photo above works great, but it looks like Yakima is working on specific fixed point bases for naked roofs for the Toyota Tacoma 3rd gen. At least that's what I gather from this. I would love to learn more about their upcoming offerings but I can't find any info.

 

Queen Hatchet, Yakima phased out their round bars a couple years ago. They’ve gone to an oval. You can still find round bars and accessories around. But probably not to fit new trucks. I have a bunch of Yakima “stuff”. I’ve been a fan of Yakima since my first rack bought back in 1988. I get most of my Yakima stuff on CL at a fraction of retail prices. I mount mine on tracks on my toppers.

What size Yakima windshield (I think this is what Yakima is calling it now) is that? The Yakima fit guide states 46".

 

We have the 46in windshield on ours and it fits great.
Also have the baseline towers that clamp inside the door frames. They've been great.

It is worth noting that Yakima now has a landing pad that is specifically designed for the Tacoma.

Thank you and everyone else who contributed to this thread with their info!
I now have all the components to try this mysef- here is what i have:
1. Set of four Yakima control towers (pre-skyline towers but attach the same) used off ebay for $160
2. Pair of 58” round bars i already had, which i will probably shorten.
3. Set of four Landing pads, #24 as mentioned above, they are made specific to mount to 3rd gen tacoma roofs factory roof rack location. $126 from rack attack website.
4. Yakima “basketcase” old style roof basket and mounting hardware. $60 off craigslist
5. Yakima old school first generation wind fairing off ebay for $80 shipped

at $426 total investment this setup comes way under what a prinsu costs and in my experience using yakima racks for over 26 years, will be just as, if not stronger than prinsu racks. I have zero doubt this setup will easily handle a rtt or whatever other shit i want to load up onto it.
I once hauled a complete 1927 ford roadster body on the roof of my wagon on yakima racks and drove it 1700 miles to its next owner no prob. That shit was way overloaded lol and it was just fine. Not condoning that behavior, but i trust em for sure.

I really like that style basket because because it "hangs" from the bars and sits recessed down between them instead of higher up on top. Do they make one like this new now or is it only the old design?
